It's pretty common in the North. Older houses built in the 40s thru 60s that have never been fully renovated. Furnaces are surprisingly resilient

So make them straight, like wow it's not hard

[-] arrow74@lemmy.zip 1 points 9 hours ago

You missed the point. We do not have to increase taxes to achieve this. We just have to stop bombing the shit out of half the world and reallocate that funding.

Our taxes could stay exactly the same. Of course the lobbyists prefer we spend billions and billions on pointless wars and the military, but we don't get shit from it.

Funny how the country can eminent domain your property to build a road or a transmission line, but they seem to not be able to eminent domain this nice rail system

Also we have spent an insane amount of money, 43.6 billion so far, fighting a pointless war in Iran. Yet it's unrealistic to spend money on rail

[-] arrow74@lemmy.zip 2 points 12 hours ago

What we have now is not functional. And you will never convince me that we somehow don't have enough money to make the average American's life better, but somehow we have the money to spend 43.6 billion, so far, on a pointless war with Iran. We have the money

[-] arrow74@lemmy.zip 9 points 12 hours ago

Except there is plenty of profit in the form of increased commerce. Indirect profit is something corporations and government struggles with. Line will go up after this is built. Which takes more than a fucking quarter

[-] arrow74@lemmy.zip 5 points 12 hours ago

approximately $82 billion USD

We've spent over half that on the Iran war so far.

I think you're really overestimating the scale. The population of the US and Canada prior to European arrival was at the highest estimate 13 million.

The modern population of the US alone is 340 million. Essentially you'd have to be exceedingly wealthy to have deer meat once a month under that plan.

Additionally, the Natives did manage forests to be much more productive, but the largest population growth seen throughout North America followed the introduction of domestic crops such as corn. The forests did produce more food than today, but you're overstating their effectiveness. And I won't even get into how many of the cultures of North America weren't even reliant on deer.

Honestly the only way to get calories in an environmentally conscious way would be to cut out meat entirely. Nothing the Native Americans were doing would come close to even being able to feed the modern population.

Absolutely not, not even close.

There are 86.2 million cows in the US right now. Milk cows make up 9.57 million. These will also be slaughtered, but after many years.

There are an estimated 30 to 35 million deer in the US. That's a huge difference. 30 million cows are slaughtered each year.

Plus an adult deer weighs 203lbs on average while a full weight cow weighs around 1,200 pounds. So you need 6 adult deer to make the weight of 1 cow.

Deer would be extinct locally within 6 months if we tried to replace beef consumption this way.

Yep one time we were in a hospital and the nurse walked in and said wow 4 generations of a family all in one room. Yeah she thought my aunt was my grandma. That was a fun one to explain

But my personal favorite hospital assumption was when my great aunt was recovering. At the time they thought she wasn't going to make it and brought in a priest. She has a stereotypical Hispanic last name, her kids are all half-cuban, and they all grew up in Miami. They bring in a priest (catholic) and he begins doing his thing all in Spanish. Eventually someone finally leans in to tell him she does not speak Spanish. 80% of the room spoke Spanish, but not her. She married a Cuban, but was not at all Hispanic herself. Needless to say the priest was embarrassed

Pretty common in a lot of "gendered" languages actually.

Certainly the case in every language English is related to

Basically the title, just wanted to see how people are approaching the very real possibility of global fuel shortages in the coming months.

I feel good on food to help lessen the blow of inflation, but looking at the el nino's effect on agriculture I'm reluctant to burn through my food supplies too much.

How does everyone else feel? What are you doing to prepare?

It's equally possible that there was more than one or even a day where only people were born and no one died.

There was a low point where only about 2,000 humans were estimated to be alive. Certainly you couldn't have had someone dying everyday then
