That's hard mode. Hard Mode gives you a little asterisk after your score. You can set the game to always enforce Hard Mode.
No idea why, but what you said just clicked. Thank you, friend. "Hard Mode" just seems like the best way to maximize chances of a good score, exploratory guesses just don't seem worth it. At least now I get my asterisk lol

I always play by the old "hardcore" ruleset where you can't change a letter once it's green or remove it once it's yellow, and the analysis bot always bullies me about it.
You can still tell the game to switch to Hard Mode. That's the little asterisk next ti some people's score.
