Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

I had a busy weekend. Market, library, Bunnings, clearing out the kids' artwork (big job), started to weed the veggie garden that had overgrown over the winter, played some AoE3DE (the free parts) as well as starting SW: Galactic Battlegrounds Saga.

Now it's back to work, for a productive Monday.

And you're into it early this morning too! My kids have mostly gotten out of the 'school artwork' phase now thank goodness. Make sure you keep a bit from each year though, as you'll look back on it with nostalgia very shortly.

Another spectacular day here on the Coast - rain due in tomorrow though so a few things to get done this afternoon after work.

We scan or take photos of pretty much any piece of art that looks like some effort has gone into it, so have plenty to look back on.

Looks like we have rain due tomorrow too, so I'd better try to get the lawn mowed today.

Nice! How did you find the games btw, did they live upto your expectations? :)

AoE3DE was much like I remembered the original, but the graphics were definitely an improvement.

Galactic Battlegrounds was a but of a generational shock to start with, I had forgotten what graphics were like in 2000. But as I played, the AoE2 feel came out and I started to get the feel for it again. I'm playing with the Expanding Fronts mod, didn't even try it without it, so I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes. I'll continue to play through the campaigns and see how it goes.

Nice. For Galactic Battlegrounds though, do check out the cnc-ddraw patch if you haven't already, it does a decent job of upscaling the graphics. Expanding Fronts is more of a QoL and added content mod, but doesn't do any upscaling stuff.

I think I installed it but can't see any differences. Should it be obvious?

You'll need to extract it to the game folder (where the game's main executables are present) and run the cnc-ddraw config executable. Use Fullscreen Upscale, then go to advanced settings and use xbrz freescale. Make sure it's set to openGL.

This is only a one-time thing btw, it works automatically in the background. The next time you run the game, just launch it normally using the Expanding Fronts launcher.

Yeah so I extracted to the game folder. When we say the game folder, we mean the root directory of the game? Because it also has a "Game" folder 😆

I've set the details just as you described. I'm pretty sure it's not being loaded.

I'm running it on Linux, which might be related. I've read it should work, and there's an extra step about setting it to override ddraw but it still doesn't seem to work. I'll have another play when I get more time later.

Yes, this should be extracted to the "Game" subfolder, where the Battlegrounds_x2 exe is located. Then run cnc-ddraw config and set the scaler/shader. Finally, add an override for ddraw using winetricks.

Edit: apparently the dll override is no longer required in the latest cnc-ddraw release

cnc-ddraw config does now detect wine (linux/macOS) and offers to add the needed dll override

I got it working! Just silly me putting it in the wrong directory!

Thanks for the help! It will make it nicer to look at as I play through the campaigns 🙂

[–] d3Xt3r 2 points 1 year ago

Yay! Glad you could get it going. :)

[–] Dave 2 points 1 year ago

Oh they didn't capitalise "Game" in the instructions (what little instructions there were) so I took it as meaning the game's directory. I will give it another go and let you know how I get on!

my partner and I are in the Hastings hospital emergency department. we arrived at 8am. after a couple hours she was finally seen, they took a blood sample. hours later they came back to say, oops, we screwed up labelling the first one, need another. then they took an xray. then an ultrasound. they haven't told her anything about the results, or anything else.

she's been here 8 hours at this point.

I’ve spent a lot of time in EDs and this is pretty much par for the course. We always packed water, snacks, and phone charging pack thingys.

Still convalescing after my jab. Beautiful sunny day here and I was able to lie outside for half an hour. It was great.
