==========

Our galactic citizens have requested more specific rules, so here are a few.

The general idea is, if you're looking here for rules, you're probably someone who doesn't need to have them spelled out. You're fine. But anyway:

  1. This is a community for Star Wars memes. This means typically screenshots of Star Wars media with some text or context that's meant to be funny and/or thoughtful. All SW media is welcome: movies, games, comic books, fanart... Other kinds of content, like video links or meta memes (about this community, or Lemmy), are fine as well, just keep it on topic.

  2. We are all friends here, and love (sometimes love to hate) Star Wars. Be nice to each other.

  3. As fans of fictional media, we can be passionate. If you very strongly disagree with something or someone, take a deep breath before reacting. Anger leads to the dark side!

  4. Everything in Star Wars has happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, and it's a rich universe of millions of words and millions of years of history. So current Earthly matters really shouldn't concern us here. In other words, leave politics, philosophies and convictions behind the door. This applies even if it's about something related to Star Wars.

  5. Original content is preferred. Reposts are fine, just please limit to a maximum of 3 per day, per citizen. It is recommended, but not required, to mark original memes as (OC) and reposts as (repost).

  6. Local mods are the Jedi council. They may take actions that are necessary to maintain peace and stability of the Republic, even beyond the rules outlined here. Follow their guidance.

  7. Regular rules of the Lemmy.world instance apply.

Tbf Obi had just seen the holos of the kids being murdered by his assistant so understandably pissed.

[–] proti@lemmy.world 51 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Maybe Anakin had a reason for slaughtering them? Obi-Wan should at least listen first before being a drama queen.

[–] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 74 points 1 month ago (1 children)

People judge him so harshly, but like, who among us hasn't slaughtered a group of children?

[–] YtA4QCam2A9j7EfTgHrH@infosec.pub 77 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Are you part of the IDF by any chance?

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 29 points 1 month ago

Savage. Not unfair, but savage.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 35 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It was clearly self defense.

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 38 points 1 month ago

They had pocket sand

[–] shadowfax13@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 month ago

seriously, those sand-kids were hamas shields. what else was anakin supposed to do if not kill them in their home.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Clearly both sides are in the wrong

[–] fsxylo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah, Anakin gotta die after that.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 77 points 1 month ago (7 children)

i'm still so mad about that story line. 3 films worth of plot and it feels like George forgor that Anakin has to become Darth Vader at the end. So he fast forwarded a whole corruption arc, which then made Anakin look like a moron who got swayed to the dark side and abandoned his moral compass & all his friends in the span of days because some clearly dodgy guy told him "you see the Jedi council Anakin? they're hiding something,,, clearly the most optimal path forward is to become evil, go kill some children"

[–] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 48 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I feel the same way, but the Clone Wars animated series really changed my opinion on what Lucas was going for with Anakin's fall. The movies didn't execute on the idea all that well, but when you add in the extra background the Clone Wars added, I think it made a lot more sense.

[–] fsxylo@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah the movies didn't magically become good just because Lucas gave us homework.

[–] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

I never argued the movies were good

[–] GiveMemes@jlai.lu 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The novelization of the third movie is also great and does a lot more to show anakins internal dilemma and psychological state.

Like, the guy was having prophetic nightmares of his wife dying night after night and one of his closest mentors (number 2 behind obiwan) offers a way to ensure those terrible visions never come to pass.

and he was fighting in a brutal war for years and was basically not sleeping at all for days when palps really started making serious moves on him. sleep depravation is serious shit and jedi or not Anakin is a human

I especially hated the “Anakin killing kids” scene. It’s not very realistic that he turns in a few days to a child killer, maybe he could step aside while to clones do it, killing them with his lightsaber was too cartoonishly evil for me.

[–] GiveMemes@jlai.lu 38 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

He had already murdered an entire village of sand people at this point. He was clearly capable of horrible things.

[–] Flocklesscrow@lemm.ee 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yah, but audiences were like, "sand people? I can excuse that with casual racism."

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

He did it out of anger. It's very plausible. They just went a, b, c, d, z though. Skipped a lot of steps on his way to the dark side. Anakin needed way more development, or any development, in episode 1 if they wanted this to work over 3 movies.

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I agree that he did already evil things, but I think there is a difference between killing members of an alien race for revenge, and slaying human children from your own community.

And I’m no way excusing him, I just think there could have been more nuance to the topic, there are steps of evilness they could have explored to make this more believable.

It’s also very interesting how some people are divided over this scene, e.g. a friend of mine had the exact same explanation as you mentioned, while another friend also found it a bit too much. I guess it’s just subjective, based on your own perception and understanding of “evil”.

[–] pjwestin@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

To be fair, he did also kill an entire village of Tusken Raiders, including women and children, one movie before that. It's just that those movies are so weird and disjointed that this doesn't feel like a piece of character building that later pays off in the third movie, but rather a weird fever dream that you forget about almost entirely by the time Attack of the Clones is finished

[–] frayedpickles@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Do tusken women not raid? Are they split by gender? Do they even have gender?

I ask only because I haven't seen these films since they came out.

[–] pjwestin@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think so. I remember Anakin delivering the line, "I killed them all. Not just the men, but the women! And the children!" in such a ham-fisted way that I actually LOLed in the theater. But I also haven't seen those movies in at least 10 years.

[–] frayedpickles@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Lol amazing, that poor kid

[–] pjwestin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Hayden Christensen? Yeah, I agree. It's not his fault Lucas can't write normal human interactions.

[–] jjagaimo@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 month ago

Idk something about that description seems a bit too real given current events

[–] frayedpickles@lemmy.cafe 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yeah it took the US 8 years, Anakin did it over a long weekend. Boom gottem.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago
[–] burgerpocalyse@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

so anakin kneels in front of monster mash and pledges loyalty to the graveyard smash

[–] variants@possumpat.io 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well they did show him love his mother a bunch and even having weird dreams about her so when Palpatine let's him know he can save her by learning the ways of the dark side he does everything because that was his main motivator all along

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

yea the motivation was good (story telling wise), but the time it took him to become corrupted was just too fast. Even if in universe it took longer than a couple of days, on our screen the whole arc was maybe 15 minutes

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 40 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And Luke would definitely have fallen for the dark side if the Emperor hadn't gloated "good, good, you're falling for the dark side" like an imbecile.

"Each stanza kinda rhymes with the last one... [grimaces] ...hopefully it'll work."

[–] Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He's standing like a guy who just banged your wife, how was Anakin supposed to react?

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

You see that scene where they’re going up to her apartment, to do the protection thing?

She was excited to see Obi, barely remembered ani (and it wasn’t until jar jar got all happy like the drunken uncle you’re almost never allowed to see calling him by name…)

Yeah. Obi was totally with Padme.

Also that deleted scene with her family and the emphatic “we’re not dating”.

And those straight up incel pick up lines….

anakin totally dominated her mind to get with her. (And the terrible lines working… was lowkey genius,)

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Lotta prequel hate in this thread

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's a Star Wars community. Whether it's the prequels or the sequels, it won't matter. You're still gonna have a bunch of people going pathetically rabid over it as if it's the be all end all.

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

Nobody hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans
