I work with a ton of immigrants and some I have known for for 20 years. The thought of losing them is just painful.

“Our nation is a nation of immigrants. More than any other country, our strength comes from our own immigrant heritage and our capacity to welcome those from other lands." -Ronald Reagan

It's ridiculous how far right the USA has moved when it comes to immigration. Reagan was a scumbag overall but was right about this. Frankly it pisses me off that even the Democrats are so far right on this.

[–] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 35 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Of course Reagan meant [white] immigrants.

It's ridiculous how far right the USA has moved when it comes to immigration.

Agreed, and I think maybe we should remove the plaque from the Statue of Liberty as it clearly no longer applies.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

[–] Bamboodpanda@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Reagan was an idiot about a lot of things. His policies were often at odds with his rhetoric which was quite progressive for its time and place. If you listened to him though, he was not openly hostile to immigration. Neither him nor H.W. where on the scale of today's right.

I really think the right of the 80s/90s is way different than todays right.

Dems, Rebubs as individuals aren't really anything other than drones that follow orders on what to think and what to get angry about. It's a systemic issue where money is injected into the fringes to piss the other side off and force a defensive posture and eventually conflict from fear.

Every idea that categorizes into left/right needs to be challenged at this point.
The left will never prevail
The right will never prevail

We must recognize and respond to what is really happening.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 0 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Both the left and right 100% worship at the altar of capitalism. What the people want doesnt factor into much except the votes every 2-4 years, which are heavily steered and give us little real democratic control of our future. Capitalism maximizes profits and couldnt care less whats good for society.

I'm not saying the left and the right are the same, but they work for the same bosses, and thats the rich, not us. You and I only really exist as abstract concepts to them, not as fellow humans. Our carefully curated votes are a means to an end, and that end is not whats good for the people of the country.

https://monthlyreview.org/2009/05/01/why-socialism/

Once our votes are removed as trump said he'd do, we serve little real purpose to them. Why incentivize your workforce when you can make them live in fear and pay them less?

[–] JamesFire@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

Both the left and right 100% worship at the altar of capitalism.

What left?

The democrats are not leftists lmao

What are you talking about? Pedro is the exception, the one good guy. They won't deport him, I need him! They can't do that to me, can they?

"Mommy, why did we send Jesus to a concentration camp?"

[–] Archelon@lemmy.world 20 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I mean the evacuation of the Jews, the extermination of the Jewish race. It’s one of those things it is easy to talk about, “the Jewish race is being exterminated,” says one party member, “that’s quite clear, it’s in our program, elimination of the Jews, and we’re doing it, exterminating them.” And then they come, 80 million worthy Germans, and each one has his decent Jew. Of course the others are vermin, but this one is an A-1 Jew.

-Heinrich Himmler to senior SS officers, 1943.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

replace "jews" with "palestinians" and it reads like Isralei leadership's statements now.

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israeli-ministers-call-erase-palestinian-village-an-incitement-violence-us-says-2023-03-01/ "Asked about a weekend settler rampage through the Palestinian village of Huwara, which an Israeli general on Tuesday described as a "pogrom," Smotrich said: "I think that Huwara needs to be erased"."

https://www.commondreams.org/news/smotrich-gaza-annihilation "In just the latest example of a top Israeli official openly calling for the elimination of Gaza and the 2.3 million Palestinians who live there, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Tuesday demanded the destruction of cities and refugee camps in the blockaded enclave.

"There are no half measures," said Smotrich at a government meeting. "Rafah, Deir al-Balah, Nuseirat—total annihilation."

"'You will blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven,'" he added, quoting the biblical story of the nation of Amalek, whose people God commanded the Israelites to exterminate and which right-wing Israeli leaders have long invoked to justify the killing of Palestinians."

https://www.dailysabah.com/world/mid-east/starving-2m-palestinians-to-death-justified-far-right-israeli-min "Starving 2M Palestinians to death justified: Far-right Israeli minister"

He's a good hombre.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago

They claim to love Jesus, so maybe they will spare him.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 14 points 18 hours ago (5 children)

I thought the reason trump won was the Hispanic support. That was what was so strange about this election.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

I think the bigger reason Trump won is a bunch of people didn't feel like it was worth voting. And now they will find out why that was a bad move.

[–] orcrist@lemm.ee 1 points 5 hours ago

"the reason" ... No no no. There were many reasons.

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 8 points 13 hours ago

It's not any more strange than literally any republican voting to shoot themselves in the foot. Nobody benefits from it. Not even the rich! It just feeds their money addiction like a drug dealer feeds a junkie.

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

Yup. But just remember that everyone, possibly including the native nations are all immigrants. Now the native nations were here first so obviously they should call the shots.

Immigrant workers in the US are the definition of essential workers. Many work hard agricultural jobs and take exploitatively low wages to do so.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 97 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They'll be "detained" in for profit prisons and then under the federal prisoner labor program they'll get paid 10 cents an hour to do the same work. The detention will end up becoming indefinite and private corps will reap the profits of modern-day slavery on a bigger scale than they already do from our (disproportionately) large incarcerated population.

[–] MisterFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

I hate how possible this is

[–] lemmus@lemmy.world 48 points 1 day ago (4 children)

And Californian’s rejected a ballot measure to make this illegal, so they’re getting what they wanted.

[–] CasualPenguin@reddthat.com 5 points 14 hours ago

Absolutely insane this measure was rejected

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago

SOME Californians

It’s ok. Once DOGE kills the economy, everybody will be eager to trim trees and drive Uber and deliver DoorDash. Except there won’t be anyone able to pay them to do that.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 27 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

Nonsense, the FREE MARKET will provide. The FREE MARKET loves us and wants to protect us from the mean old world.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

The FREE MARKET that bans all freedom by placing Tariffs against other countries to control the market and banning the production of products such as lab grown meats before they come to market and car sales from manufacturers to consumers without having middle men. (Those 2 are just Florida examples).

We want the enslaved market

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 9 points 21 hours ago

Yep, the FREE MARKET working as the founding fathers intended...

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago

I doubt they would’ve even taken the sign off the lawn.
