We even offered expandable storage with our proprietary MemoryStick ProDuo Max Plus Ultra, only $100 for 32 GB!
I appreciate the artist who created this image with the theme "Artist's conception of God breathing new life into the sadly neglected PlayStation Vita. Credit: Sony" (from the article):
The Vita (like the PSP before it) was really a stellar handheld for its time. Innovative control options, which a few games used to great effect; great graphics; solid battery life; great looking display; solid and compact construction... I wish it had gotten more support. I loved that thing.
Ehhh....
It was very limited by the decisions Sony made.
Proprietary memory cards (that were fuuuucking expensive, not to mention its high MSRP for the unit itself), having to manually sign into PSN to check messages instead of some sort of push notification system, very limited library (and no cross over purchases from the PSP) - it was essentially a glorified remote play console, and was abandoned soon after launch as Sony focused on the PS4.
I still got mine and fire it up for a kick of nostalgia now and then. I wish they supported it more. Its a great handheld.
Little big planet was fun
So a bunch of exclusive games get stuck on it like they did with the PSP? I hope not.
Maybe. But if they make it on arm it could benefit from easier porting of (non Nintendo) switch 2 games
Depends on if it will be a unique system or compatible to the PS5 game library. I mean if a PC can do that, then a highly optimized console should be able to. However, I'm a bit skeptic, as the PS5 is a huge console that needs ton of cooling. If there was a weaker console version where the games day 1 has to be compatible, like the Series S, then a handheld would be much more attainable. That's an advantage on the handheld sight for Microsoft.
Therefore I'm curious on a technical level. If its end up being a unique weaker handheld, then it will be easier to emulate. :-)
If it's only playing PS5 games, by definition, it's not exclusive.
The PSP is the reason I got to enjoy Disgaea, Burnout, Metal Gear, and tons of first party franchises without needing something that can handle PS2. It's way easier to emulate and the games aren't that huge, and there are many games that are close equivalents across platforms...and it's native widescreen, and looks nice in HD,...
Man, the PSP rules.
The Vita, however, ehhh, give it about five more years.
Sony is going to have to invent a new "shittier than SD and ten times as expensive" memory card format first.
The Vita already proved how serious Sony is about the handheld market. "Someday, we're going to make a system that is ten times as powerful as the Steam Deck and runs for a week on a single charge". The only purpose of making such a nothingburger announcement is to try to Osbourne Effect the rest of the handheld market.
Your right on the vita part, but I'm guessing it would be totally digital, with no external storage at all.
Nice! Heat up the handheld war and give us innovative design and more choice.
IMO for this to have any chance against the Switch 2 it needs to be able to run PC games. Ps5 is already struggling with very few games (with most of them likely not working in such a handheld format), it needs something to sell on. Meanwhile Microsoft just needs a handheld compatible with gamepass and they're basically set.
Yep. That's the delicious irony here. They could probably release a Linux or Windows based clone next week, if they wanted.
The years of work they're putting in is probably 90% to avoid leaking their game engine on non-proprietary hardware. Which is the same choice that will make it an unprofitable market flop.
If they just released a handheld PC but with their UI and store as default it would probrally make tons of money, of course that means respecting their customers so its unlikely.

A handheld in development now will have at least launch-PS4 level of performance. Also, PS5 games just need to ship a Low Graphics preset most game developers make for PCs anyway.
The problem is that handhelds need games that are easy to get and out of. PC has tons of those games while the PS4/PS5 has very few of. Also while some people want to play console games on the go it's less fun on a smaller screen.

No idea what you're talking about. The top charting games on Steam Deck are mostly also available ob PS4/5.
You can't just show sackboy and littlebigplanet in the thumbnail. you gave me hope it would be an article about how mediamolicule is back and lbp4 being announced. I gave up consoles after the ps3 but if theres one exclusive that could rope me back in it would be that. Fuck Sony you had one good series that I would love to bond over with my kids and you let it die a slow horrible death. If you played your cards right you could have had a game series that rivaled minecraft itself for popularity amongst everyone.
To be fair, it's also shown on a PS Vita. So the thumbnail was basically equivalent to showing Sackboy in a graveyard.
