No Stupid Questions

Because to get lots of karma (karma being bad because you spend all your waking hours online) you need to be terminally online, and engaged with posting only the content the majority agree with, common karma winners are: cat pictures, political opinions supporting what's trending in a given community, using bots to upvote you, getting admins/mods to give you karma. Can't think of anything else I never used reddit.

Lemmy is a great opportunity to ignore karma. So ignore it.

Its because the more you read and comment the less patience you have.

It might be your first time saying something stupid but for someone who has been on the community for a long time they may have seen the comment hundreds or thousands of times and are to tired to give it a soft understanding response. Mix in the fact that some people making the "stupid" comments are intentional and malicious in their intent and you end up getting old-head users who come off bitter and snarky.

Maybe you feel this way because karma points are an objective representation of the quality of someone's value as a human being, just like net worth, penis length/boob size and the number of users on their discord servers.

If they were egostistical assholes how come they have so much karma? Do you think people would really prize them with more stuff if they were horrible people? The world doesn't work like that, because justice is real and everything works perfectly.

Probably not. So you have no idea how the average person with "lots of 'karma points'" tends to act. Instead, you're looking at the profile of people who feel safe enough in a space to let themselves be seen as assholes.

This is like asking "why does drinking alcohol make everyone violent?" You're just noticing the ones who are making a scene.

Same as on stackoverflow, they're playing the game of "get all the points". Meanwhile don't give a bleep about the social part of social media.

Egotistical assholes gain attention more than regular commentators.

Internet culture rewards the loud, obnoxious, and offensive with attention and engagement. Advertisers like attention and engagement, so they financially back the loud, obnoxious, and offensive.

This is why it's so prevalent on social media.

I think it's more because those people don't have a life outside their computer, and some of them have poor social skills and inflated ego from knowing a bit about computers.

If you spend all your time on the internet, and specially social media, you get a warped view of reality.

But it's hard to get proper friends for a lot of people. I understand why the internet becomes a substitute.
