!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Every time I get a snarky, rude and shitty response from a user. 9 times out of 10 it is from users with hundreds to thousands of pointless karma points. My best guess is that it has really all gone to their heads and because of their high count, they think they're speaking the golden words of the gospel with every comment that they make.

That nothing can touch them and that they're validated so they can't be argued against.

Because to get lots of karma (karma being bad because you spend all your waking hours online) you need to be terminally online, and engaged with posting only the content the majority agree with, common karma winners are: cat pictures, political opinions supporting what's trending in a given community, using bots to upvote you, getting admins/mods to give you karma. Can't think of anything else I never used reddit.

Your account is an hour old and Lemmy doesn't have Karma...

So did you make a post complaining about Reddit and just forget youre not on Reddit?

[–] insomniac_lemon@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you go to their instance you'll see that is does list it in users' profiles (Reputation points).

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Really? I can't see yours.

[–] insomniac_lemon@lemmy.cafe 2 points 20 hours ago

I am on Lemmy, OP is not: https://kbin.melroy.org/u/Pyrin

Lemmy is a great opportunity to ignore karma. So ignore it.

Sir, this is lemmy

Its because the more you read and comment the less patience you have.

It might be your first time saying something stupid but for someone who has been on the community for a long time they may have seen the comment hundreds or thousands of times and are to tired to give it a soft understanding response. Mix in the fact that some people making the "stupid" comments are intentional and malicious in their intent and you end up getting old-head users who come off bitter and snarky.

Maybe you feel this way because karma points are an objective representation of the quality of someone's value as a human being, just like net worth, penis length/boob size and the number of users on their discord servers.

If they were egostistical assholes how come they have so much karma? Do you think people would really prize them with more stuff if they were horrible people? The world doesn't work like that, because justice is real and everything works perfectly.

Idk it sounds like you're just jel to me.

Please provide further prove. Especially a dick pic is crucial for further evaluation.

Sorry, can't right now. I lost my tweezers.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you check in on the profiles to see the karma count of people who you feel have a neutral or even positive personality?

Probably not. So you have no idea how the average person with "lots of 'karma points'" tends to act. Instead, you're looking at the profile of people who feel safe enough in a space to let themselves be seen as assholes.

This is like asking "why does drinking alcohol make everyone violent?" You're just noticing the ones who are making a scene.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

Yup. Huge selection bias.

The people bothering to post random negative comments arealso likely to have too much time om their hands, leading them to post a lot inn general. But there are also plenty of nice people woth too much time on their hands.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 5 points 1 day ago

We have known karma scores here?

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 3 points 1 day ago

Same as on stackoverflow, they're playing the game of "get all the points". Meanwhile don't give a bleep about the social part of social media.

[–] That_Devil_Girl@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Egotistical assholes gain attention more than regular commentators.

Internet culture rewards the loud, obnoxious, and offensive with attention and engagement. Advertisers like attention and engagement, so they financially back the loud, obnoxious, and offensive.

This is why it's so prevalent on social media.

[–] Gigasser@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Sometimes people be buying accounts that have farmed karma too.

I think it's more because those people don't have a life outside their computer, and some of them have poor social skills and inflated ego from knowing a bit about computers.

If you spend all your time on the internet, and specially social media, you get a warped view of reality.

But it's hard to get proper friends for a lot of people. I understand why the internet becomes a substitute.

[–] insomniac_lemon@lemmy.cafe 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I check a lot of those boxes but have never had many points on most websites. The difference I think is that I don't often make posts/threads (comments alone usually don't get as many views/points, posts may get thousands of points).

Those with the most points often make posts multiple times an hour (often a dozen posts in a day) particularly if they become "known" for some theme/gimmick (which may add to ego). Also at that point they likely have parasocial users backing up their ego and buffoonery.

I don't know if any of those "no life" people are behind this or not. I suspect people posting like this, especially when it is blog-like (their job, some other interaction) are likely normal outgoing people who just have their phone with them to post whenever they have a spare moment. It may even be a similar archetype to "influencer" (one unlikely to show their face) especially if they are saving many things ahead of time to post later. That, and the inevitable monetization even if it's just gifts/favors from strangers.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

I just wish they would be nicer. If it is like you say, and they are social, I wonder why they act like shit heads online. :)

[–] foggy@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

Because they've learned to write responses in ways that get them lots of ego rubs

The medium is the message.

Someone who is good at social media is good at what social media rewards.

Ego. A narcissist.
