RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

Hey @friendless@lemmy.blahaj.zone - did you find anyone else to hang out with?

Hey @iii@mander.xyz - what are your thoughts about Christmas on this fine day?

Hey @Platypus@lemmings.world - you said you'd be around today, what are you up to?

Personally, I might make a big pot of spaghetti later on. My cousin said they might pass by at some point but no guarantees. If I don't find anyone to talk to online, I'll probably just watch some free movies and game.

OMG same, I was reading this long article about a plane crash last night and I think it gave me nightmares or something, I remember almost falling asleep a couple times but then having sudden anxieties and waking up again, so I’m barely stirring this morning.

edit: the article: https://admiralcloudberg.medium.com/masks-smoke-and-mirrors-the-untold-story-of-egyptair-flight-804-42c788fcac2d

Merry Christmas, fellow lemmings!

I was just with my parents and brother while my girlfriend is working her shift at the hospital. Later we'll be going to see more of her family.

I like quiet, so right now is my favorite part of the day! 😉

I hope everyone is doing what they want to today, if that's traditional or not.

The shelters usually have some better owl Christmas stuff, but I didn't see much this year. You guys may have seen the Barred Owl that got in through the chimney in the news.

I do have this baby Boobook and Frogmouth though! This is probably the best owl Christmas thing I saw this season.

Have fun and I hope everyone has a good new year!

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Heyyy.... thanks for stopping by and also for hosting the Owl of the Year on !superbowl@lemmy.world... I just started subscribing to that community last year but I missed the Owl of the Year. So I was glad to see it this year, but I was like: "Noooo the Great Grey is so cool-looking, why don't people appreciate it more?!?" I mean that facial disk is amazing, it's like having a radar around your eyes.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Great Gray is constantly underappreciated. The world's longest owl deserves more respect!

One of my favs is the Long Eared and that one gets no respect either, even though it has some of the best stats on paper as far as things it has that everyone likes.

I donated the new Owl of the Year plaque from the animal rescue yesterday, so our donation in the community's name has been made.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh wow, I missed the post about the plaque and the donation, that's so cool of you. I should donate something to the animal shelter here, I think I have some mail about that around here...

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I didn't post about it yet since no one is here. I'll probably do it in the year end recap.

You totally should support your local place! It's a crime none of these places gets a single cent of public support. They do really great work, and even if it's not a place you can visit their actual facility due to regulations, most places usually have an annual open house or they do public events. It's a really positive thing you can do for the health of your local animals and protects the biodiversity of your community.

I try to avoid directly talking about money, as I know everyone is in a different financial position and I don't want to seem pushy or making people feel guilty for not donating, but it's crucial to protecting the animals in your own neighborhoods.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah I think one of the great things about the "animal" communities on Lemmy is that they humanize animals, and make people realize how much our local environment is enriched by them. Even if you're in a city there are all kinds of birds and small mammals that people take for granted.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Very true. We need to think of them as a meaningful part of our world if we're to do anything good for them.

[–] Alice@beehaw.org 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Going to see my family, hopefully for the last Christmas. I'm prone to verbal shutdowns, so every holiday, everyone just gets to say whatever they want right in front of my gay ass.

I only keep showing up for the kids, but I think next year I'll try to make separate plans with them, like picking a weekend to bake cookies or shop for their friends.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 month ago

Christmas is toxic. When I was a kid, New Years was the bigger deal. I think because we didn't have a lot of money to spend on presents and for New Years people would just make little bonfires in the streets and throw coins. (this was in Latin America)

[–] Corno@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm doing great! Been talking with family and eating delicious food. I got a TON of chocolate because everyone knows how much I love white chocolate biscuits and other chocolates haha. I've also been drawing this little fishy friend! 😃

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh yeah... I just finished my second plate of spaghetti that I cooked. My cousin stopped by and I gave them some but I think they didn't like it bc I made it with less butter and fewer eggs...

[–] Corno@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Two plates of spaghetti sounds great! Honestly while it may not be everyone's cup of tea, I prefer mine with less of both too!

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

It's probably more healthful with less butter and fewer eggs... but I think I overdid it. Or underdid it. I still forced myself to finish it up though, lel.

This is year 2 of my tradition of "order a pizza and play video games"

I'm not close to my family. They invited me there, I invited them here, neither party accepted.

Maybe in the future I'll be dating someone who wants to do more. Until then: pizza and path of exile 2

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

That's cool fam, I'm pretty much doing the same thing. I'm not close to my family either, it's kind of funny, whenever we get together we all just go to our own corners and ignore each other. One time someone put on a football game and I tried to get them to make cheering sounds but they just looked at me like I'm crazy.

[–] I_am_10_squirrels@beehaw.org 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm working. I'm at a small waste water treatment plant and we need to collect samples today. I scheduled myself for today, so I can avoid the in-laws and use the holiday hours next month.

I'm the only one here, and it's a slow day so I have time for lemmy.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 month ago

Oh yeah, santitation engineering is really important, I'm always like: make sure everything's working OK, and my housemates think I'm crazy, but the alternative is that we all get some weird infection if it isn't working.

[–] GreyShuck@feddit.uk 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I celebrate the solstice, but today is just another day off as far as I am concerned. So just the usual stuff: had a lay in, played a bit of Forge of Empires, did a couple of chores, have just been reading (Confessions of a Justifed Sinner, Hyperion and just started Conan: City of the Dead), and will watch a couple of episodes of TV (Wolf Hall, Agatha All Along and Gatiss' Ghost Story for Christmas Woman of Stone) with my wife this evening. She has been doing much the same, plus some yoga at the moment.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I really loved Hyperion when I was younger, especially "Fall of Hyperion" though I never got into any of the sequels. I should take a look at that again. I've also been meaning to give the Conan stories a read-through, starting with the originals then the followups. Hey, did you know there was a free movie on youtube about R.H. Howard, who wrote those Conan stories? this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtIQr7pLDEM

[–] GreyShuck@feddit.uk 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I read the original Conan tales a looooong while ago. Loved them and the de Camp ones, and the Bjorn Nyborg novel too. There are a lot of other writers that have added Conan tales, and I read a few at the time, but most were pretty mediocre. I'd stick with the early ones overall. This one was recommended on Lemmy a day or so back as having a good Lovecraftian vibe which is what attracted me. I'll see how it goes.

I did know about the movie, and did start watching it at one point, but didn't have chance to finish it. Maybe I will.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

tbh that movie about R.H. Howard wasn't that good... I quit watching it halfway through. A shame bc it has some pretty good actors, and the subject has promise.

Taking a break after a long Christmas morning spent eating a wonderful breakfast prepared by my wife, having coffee and O.J. while my wife and son had mimosas, opening presents, and just hanging out together and enjoying the holiday. We only get to see our son every few months these days, so it's really nice to be back together as a family. What're you up to?

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, I ate too much of the pasta that I made when my cousin came by, even though I did a bad job of cooking it. Now I'm gaming and watching Mexican telenovelas. Glad you got to be able to spend time with your family, it must be tough being away from your kid.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Sounds like a wonderful lazy day. I ended up taking a relaxing nap after dinner -which I almost never do- and then helped my son pack up. All in all it was a great day!

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was at work on Christmas (it's Boxing Day right now for me). Christmas isn't a thing here (no matter how hard the merchants try to make it one) so I'm mercifully unimpacted by the high stress winter season.

(High stress here comes in early spring.)

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago

Boxing Day... I'll have to read up on that, it sounds interesting. In some places I've lived there were all these Saints days that took place at the start of the year... Yeah, unfortunately I think a lot of people make a big deal out of Christmas because they just want to sell things.

[–] stinky@redlemmy.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Merry Christmas! I'm driving with my family to a fancy restaurant.. feeling a little car sick lol. I'm not a great passenger. Should be getting out soon. I'm excited, the menu looks amazing. I'll post a pic in a minute

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Going to a restaurant sounds awesome. I'm a bit surprised bc I'da thought they'd all be closed today. That's why I stocked up on food yesterday.

[–] stinky@redlemmy.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It was so good. I had lamb. Very rich food. My belly is happy now lol. Merry Christmas ♥️🧡💛💚💙💜

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

Oh yeah lamb is great, I had some take-out a couple days ago, there's a place that makes it with some roast vegetables. Merry Christmas to you too.

[–] Platypus@lemmings.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Watching porn and being in my room. My family was drinking with the neighbours in the living room. I have no intention to go anywhere and tomorrow back to my shit job

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

Well, yesterday I learned that the day after christmas is Boxing Day, so: Happy Boxing Day!

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There was an unexpected turn of events today that has given it new purpose. I have a whole day ahead of me now.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

Wow, that story was a real rollercoaster, sounds like a full day!

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

slept in. walked the dog. ate some pastry. watching the taken series while doing what I can on the commercials. first emphasis is dishes. gonna have a ham sandwich I think soon.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I didn't know there was a Taken series.... oooh looks like Jennifer Beals is in it...

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 2 points 1 month ago

its alright. second season changes it up from first season. Its free on plex currently though and the criteria for me to watch something is free.
