If that's a UXO, I'm actually a little surprised it would be the police on the scene, rather than the army.

Can't talk for UK, but in Germany there's a service by the government for cases just like that. No army or stuff, just the Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst.

E: "just" at the wrong place

If I own it, does it become Mein Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst?

It is a little bit more complex: those guys from the explosive ordnance disposal service are actually only there for ammunition which was used until 1945 or the end of the second world war. Every ammunition after that time falls in the scope of responsibilities of the German armed forces.

So yeah in total, we technically have two services in the public sector which could handle this stuff :)

Cops can handle the perimeter. You only need army EOD if local cops don't have a unit.

Around here, they've got one among them on a good day.

[-] CameronDev@programming.dev 9 points 1 year ago

And on a bad day, they have to pull one together. :D

Don't even get me started on the deeply psychological reason pigs love a sweet-glazed fried pucker to nosh on. 😶

Well, I imagine on nearly every place, the police would arrive before the army.

[-] Maalus@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Police secure it before the army arrives.

No. It's a water pump. He says it right in the post!

[-] Tetsuo@jlai.lu 25 points 1 year ago

Plot twist : it's a shell casing used to house a water pump.

But it’s powered by explosives

[-] nichtburningturtle@feddit.org 2 points 1 year ago

A petrol fueled pump? Must be old.

Somebody left that silly little guy there...

Interestingly enough, I haven't seen one of those unexploded ordnance pamphlets since I was a kid, they used to give those to everyone in my country.

Guess WWII was a long time ago and people have done a lot of metal detecting over the last few decades.
