The peas were cut and pasted from another picture, but flipped during the paste onto the new picture
Oh, I know. The trouble is my brain keeps trying to flip to match the peas, then back for the rest of the image. It's just subtly wrong enough that it isn't absurd until you focus on it.
Well in the original image the peas were on the left side. Mirroring was not an option, so the peas had to be rotated
Flip horizontally then rotate.
Mirroring is mirroring. It doesn't matter the direction if you will rotate later.
If you only mirror the original image form left to right the peas will not be on the plate
If you rotate them you'll get the exact same result as mirroring from top to bottom.
(Ignoring floating point errors.)

pretty sure the t and b are for top and bottom ?
That's in the US. Over at CERN they call 'em Truth and Beauty, and I really want that to stick.

I remember when this was first posted decades ago, I spent a couple of hours photoshopping the peas to make them look right.
What the actual fuck.
It looks like the peas were added on to the picture later, but whoever took the peas image put them on the wrong side of a plate. And then somebody decided to just flip them in photoshop instead of trying for another peas picture and thought nobody would notice.
Because it looks like the shadows on the other stuff are correct, but the peas have different lighting, and if you look at them actually upside-down, they do look normal again.
Gosh darnit CERN not again! You messed up the peas! The peeasss!!
It had to be photoshopped because who the fuck eats peas with pie and chips?
