Right now, I’m playing the early access version of Baldurs Gate 3. I’m getting ready to put it down (frustrated: BG3 has the potential to be good, but without controller support, I’m getting really frustrated with the UI. ) and switch to Yakuza Like a Dragon.

What are you playing now and what are you looking forward to playing next?

Steam Deck best tech purchase for me in a long time. Don’t judge me too much but I’ve been playing Disney Speedstorm between TotK sessions.

Disco Elysium. Fantastic writing and pretty hilarious at times.

It's also pretty good as a portable PC when traveling too, so that's nice.

[–] Sean@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Amazing game, so well written. I was regularly cracking up at it.

Stardew Valley works nicely with the Steam Deck, though with all the mods it literally takes 10 minutes to load. On the plus side though, the suspend feature basically let's me just keep the game running for days.

Celeste Strawberry Jam

An absolute masterpiece that runs perfectly on the Deck

Yeah, baby! Somebody point me in the direction of another Steam Deck subre-... Channel?

I've been playing lots of Street Fighter 6, but also Metroidvania indies. Currently playing through They Always Run and it's pretty much pixel 2d Mandalorian and it's pretty damn cool!

Horizon Zero Dawn. Had it on PS4 and didn't get far. Having a Deck changes everything.

Vampire Survivors for a while. Lately I just finished up a run through of Pokemon Red and just got started on a run of Pokemon Silver.

[–] Kris@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Diablo 4 for me! Amazing performance, it can even run on Ultra but battery is sucked dry within 45 minutes

[–] Sinnz@feddit.de 6 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Playing Diablo 4 aswell. Just finished the main quest line. Also currently playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

Have you tried lower settings to see if you get better battery life? Do you have any issues with the always online if you put it to sleep? I almost never exit a game on my steam deck unless I'm switching to a new one

After religiously following the order number tracking efforts on the Steam Deck subreddit (finally got mine May '22) it's been my 'clearing the backlog whilst sitting with the significant other' device...heavily punctuated with Vampire Survivors and, lately, Diablo 4. It's a great little roguelike device -- stuff like Cult of the Lamb, Spelunky 2, and Rogue Legacy 2 -- that I can just play for a few minutes wherever the Heck I'd like.

I still find it like holding black magic. I'm a software engineer, and I understand how it works, but playing a Windows port of a PS4 game (like Horizon) in Linux in my hands is something I don't think I'll ever not be impressed by!

[–] TopHat@compuverse.uk 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I got to ask: what's your secret on still clearing the backlog since that time? I've gotten mine since June '22 if I remember correctly, and my backlog-beating definitely got reduced.

+rep for Spelunky and Rogue Legacy 2! Really loved my short play session with RL2 when trying several games out for my backlog list, but haven't gotten back to it. Spelunky I adore, but I can't deny it's frustrating to get through it despite actually making progress after a while.

Big respect to Valve and CrossOver for turning Wine into something more usable for handheld devices running Linux (and now even macOS is profiting from it with their Game Porting Kit). There are still caveats, but it's definitely good enough for me. Software engineers like us can easily tweak with settings or improve compatibility with quick tricks compared to a regular Joe, but it's still impressive. I've always wanted to build a tiny Raspberry Pi handheld just for coding, but this is way better.

I've actually set my Deck up with a wireless keyboard and mouse and a monitor and spend a lot of time using it in desktop mode. The "real" gaming PC is still around, but it's a fallback. So I'm arguably playing Beehaw on it right now, but I just alt-tabbed away from Overload to do this. I'll play Guild Wars 2 on it for a while tomorrow..

It's mostly all ToTK, all the time here, but on the Deck, it's the System Shock remake. Runs very nicely, but the controller support is so so & I haven't spent the time setting up a config map yet.

[–] lenan@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Diablo 4, runs pretty decent.

I have 400 steam games, a Series X, a PS5, a Switch OLED, a gaming PC, but I spend most of my time playing Brotato on my Steam Deck.

I played through Disco Elysium recently and it does surprisingly well for a small screen.

Recently: Skyrim yet again, Portal 2

Currently: Horizon Zero Dawn, Wreckfest, Emulators

Next: Probably Cyberpunk. I started it a few months ago, but have been playing Horizon instead.

ohai, it me! Mostly what I'm doing with the deck is going back through my old library. My silly self even bought new vegas about a week before epic started to give it away (still worth it, best fallout game which puts it well up in the running for best RPG).

But the game I'm really excited about on the deck, the one I can't put down, is an indie hockey roguelike called tape to tape. I grew up on games like NHL 94 for the sega genesis, and this one plays like those old games, but it also has a generational roguelike element to it. You play a series of short hockey games against different teams, each with their own special talents. When you win, you win in-game currency with which you can upgrade your center, unlock different wingers to play with, unlock different talents that you can give to your players or even whole team talents. It's in early access on steam right now, plays perfectly on the deck right out of the box, has an active community where players and devs interact on discord and it's just really, really fun. Strong recommend if you played arcade-y hockey games as a kid.

I mostly play older games because I'm a bit of a patient gamer. Here are some I'm playing:

  • Yakuza 2 - kinda stalled on it, but it runs fantastically on SD; looking forward to finishing the rest of the series
  • Okami HD - not sure if it's a SD issue or the game is weird, but it controls weird; still having fun with it
  • Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - stalled out a bit, but I'll get back to it
  • Nier Replicant - fantastic experience, I'm looking forward to Automata

And games I'm looking forward to:

  • Mass Effect Legendary - never played the originals, so it'll be a treat, but I'm not looking forward to the massive 100GB download
  • Alan Wake, Control, and new Alan Wake - haven't played any, so it'll be a treat
  • Mount & Blade Bannerlord - interested in how the controls will map; I haven't played this yet, but I have played the original on PC
  • tons of smaller indie games - I've played a ton and I still have a ton in my library

I've been playing Lone Fungus from the recent metroidvania humble bundle, it's alright? Takes a lot from other games, Hollow Knight in particular, and mostly doesn't live up to its inspirations, but is still fun enough. Very easy to binge and it has a bunch of areas/bosses so it's not really repetitive or slow at all. Like a 6/10 so far, but if you've played nearly everything in the genre like I have it's fun enough

Been mostly playing ToTK on switch like some here, though I think I'll have to give a few more attempts at P ranking some bosses in Pizza Tower soon, or perhaps try to 100% Hifi Rush

Playing Cyberpunk and Ace Combat.

As a toddler+newborn dad I flat out need the option of playing on TV or in bed, and instantly flipping on or off.

I honestly never dreamed of something like this when I grew up gaming on Windows 95+. Can't wait 'til I can game with my sons.

Decker here. Have not touched it in a while since TOTK, but I've been playing emulated titles mostly on it and Civilization VI.

Looking forward to actually continue with Yakuza 0 because of the Like A Dragon hype lately! Also got some Humble Choice games I gotta try, like Windjammers 2. Really need to start getting that backlog down a bit.

I'm still not sure if I want to get the Steam Deck, I play portable games on my Switch and while I miss out on having all my Steam library and stuff, I just can't seem to reasonably justify buying one

I've just beaten Control, it's pretty weird, but still a fun game. Worked on the deck without any issues and configuration. Next I'll play Horizon Zero Dawn.

TOTK! Runs great via some of the latest Yuzu updates.

Also Pizza tower and a bit of PGA 2K21 here and there.

I’ve been playing Diablo IV since it came out! Runs surprisingly well.

[–] PhantomPhanatic@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I'm here, but I've been playing TotK on switch as of late. I was actually playing Metroid Prime: Remastered on the deck before that.

[–] Kwakigra@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

My recent obsession has been getting heavily modded Bethesda games running on the deck. Currently playing a version of Oblivion that has only ever been seen by me. I couldn't even get Oblivion running with 10 mods a decade ago but with the newer tools it's running on linux with almost 200. It's been fun.

[–] John_Coomsumer@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Old school RuneScape- don't play this game, it sucks and I have an addiction

Yuzu emulator - playing the Luminescent platinum romhack of BDSP. Having a great time, it's an excellent romhack so far.

Mechabellum - the only good auto chess style game I've played, and it's really good. Doesn't quite run well enough on the deck for my liking so I just stream from my PC in the other room

[–] interolivary@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Just as a note, there's a couple of Deck communities. I'm on !steamdeck@sopuli.xyz (beehaw.org/c/steamdeck@sopuli.xyz) and !steamdeck@lemmy.ml (beehaw.org/c/steamdeck@lemmy.ml) at the moment. The one on Sopuli seem to be a bit more active

[–] Fubarberry@lemmy.fmhy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

Yakuza Like a Dragon is my current game, it's been great. I like a lot of things about the Yakuza games in general, but the combat never really worked for me. The combat in this one is so much better imo,

I’ve been playing TOTK and some Persona 5 Royale

I've been playing a lot of Diablo IV - runs super smooth at 45FPS with very little tweaking. The controls feel great too, especially if you've ever played Diablo 3 on a controller.

Other than that, I've installed Decky and have been tweaking the system to my liking with the CSS Loader plugin. Highly recommend giving it a look!

I have been playing a lot of BotW and DRG on it. Playing BotW on it is amazing, for DRG or mainly any shooter on it there is the problem of me not being used to aim with the gyro properly yet.

[–] Domiku@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

There are dozens of us! I’ve just been happy to get through my Steam backlog since my gaming PC died. I recently played Horizon ZD and am about to start Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon

[–] Rentlar@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Slay the Spire, American Truck Simulator, Bloons TD6, Deep Rock Galactic were games I had a good experience with.

I had a USBC Dongle and was also able to play games like TMNT Shredders Revenge, Out of Space, Moving Out, Plate Up and Overcooked with other people very easily by bringing it with me and extra controllers.
