Next article: volcano falls out of a window.

LMAO took me a second, then I pictured it XD

I have to wonder if the melting ice, changing where the weight of the world's water is, might have an impact on the frequency of earthquakes and volcanoes.

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

Scientists have already proved that and are worried about volcanoes in Greenland and Antarctica.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

makes sense. a supervolcano would be ground zero for the coldest temps after the skies are blotted out with ash.

when you think about it like that, Greenland being a supervolcano doesn't sound so far fetched.

[-] AlexLost@lemmy.world 30 points 1 year ago

That's sort of how volcanoes work? They don't release the schedule, so you kinda have to be on your toes all the times. You know, hard times yada yada.

[-] Saleh@feddit.org 4 points 1 year ago

Some volcanoes are kind enough to give you about a week heads up.

But we also lack perspective. The volcanoes work in thousands, hundreds of thousands and millions of years. For them being a few years, or for the larger ones a few thousand years "early" or "late" is what for us are a few seconds to minutes.

"Sunday's 7.0 magnitude quake hit the Kuril Islands and could lead to waves of up to 18cm (7in), Russia's emergency ministry reported."

" Ah! My ankles are wet! "

6 inches of running water can absolutely sweep you off your feet

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 1 year ago

Only if it's running fast and has been running over the surface long enough that it created a slick bio film on the ground already. A 6 inch wave of water won't even knock down your Grandma.

[-] Neverclear@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

Yes, your legs can resist 10 lbs of lateral force, but for how long? 30 seconds? 2 minutes? Also what does the water carry?

Let's say the water carries a 3 foot wide tree branch against your ankles. Your surface area just went from 3 inches to 3 feet. 10 lbs becomes 120 lbs.

It's not as simple as walking with heavier shoes.

hmmm....is the ring of fire finally activating?

[-] Aqarius@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Trumpet chorus playing faintly in the distance

[-] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

There are no threats to populated areas, Russia's emergency ministry said.

Which means nothing coming from the Russian state.

[-] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Sure, but it really is extremely isolated. There are some tiny towns a bit over 100 km away and then it's thousands of km to anywhere else. Volcanos rarely endanger more than 40 km around them.

[-] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

So they didn't have to lie this time, nice

Earth: I gave some many signs

Guess he'll have to rebuild the secret lair somewhere else.

Who was the last ruzzian asshole president to be tossed into a volcano? Yes it could be accidental and from the 5th floor so long as the body enters the lava.

[-] Quadhammer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

It's happening 👋 👋
