Second post in a row that has what looks like a pile of brown sugar on the side of the plate. What is that?
I tried finding out. It appears this dish is called Mazesoba and the sugar-like substance is Bonito powder.

Interesting that Bonito Flakes are banned in the EU due to high levels of a carcinogenic hydrocarbon.
Whaaat?? We use bonito flakes at home to make udon soup and other dishes.
