Firefox on Android is pretty good and you can still install an ad blocker.
Brave has it blocked from the start. No extension needed. And if you enjoy mobile games, change your dns provider to "dns.adguard-dns.com", it will block all ads for apps. You need to have the app closed when changing to it, to be effective.
Pihole, adaway, firefox+ublock and newpipe. Layered defense.

Made the mistake of buying a Xiaomi for my wife. Fuck that phone. Everything that comes stock on the phone contains ads. Some you can turn off, some you can't.

Like most others here; I don't see adds on my phone. Now when I use someone else's, or a 'smart' TV or a library computer…
Watching tv at someone's place or using someone's phone of computer is pure nightmare fuel to me. You just let them do that to you?
My mums funny with it, we met a few weeks ago and said she wanted a new (very expensive) watch and was particular with model and brand, I asked what had got her on to it, she said Facebook has been showing the watch to her for weeks, she later that day spend £3600 for that watch on finance.
I would feel used and like a sucker but she doesn't make that same connection. Facebook are just showing her what she wants
I would say simply to avoid buying phones from ad-companies, but more generally... if you buy hardware from vendors that respect ownership (i.e. that have user-unlockable bootloaders) then you don't really have to worry about this kind of thing, as even if the company turns evil later, you can probably flash the phone with a 3rd party rom.

Would be a shame if Android disabled sideloading entirely like apple.
If you don't review the app permissions in your phone, uses apps from Google Play, don't uses DNS filtering, you even will see personalized ads of products near your home with an "Hello" with your name and your photo.
Privacy is difficult to obtain in Desktop, but mobiles, at least those with a stock OS, are spyware by definition, never good to store important data in these.
My lifetime Adguard licence has lasted for a few phones now. I think it started on the Note 3.

Using RethinkDNS for on-device blocking, but also let it make a wireguard tunnel to my house so I can make use of my PiHole at home.
I use a wireguard tunnel and run my system through my dual PiHoles at home... on my iPhone. I don't get tons of ads. But I'm stubborn like that. If they manage to show me ads after all, I'll simply stop using the whatever unless I have no choice. I'm not married to any of this shit and hate ads more than I like apps etc.
I've never heard of RethinkDNS before. How does it compare with adguard and nextdns?
I haven't really used adguard or nextdns before so I can't compare apples to apples. I can say that Rethink is a FOSS local-VPN-based adblocker that doesn't need root. I used to use a different VPN based one before that I forgot the name of, but because it was a VPN I couldn't also connect to my home Wireguard VPN at the same time, so I was swapping VPNs all the time. I like it because I can be connected to my home VPN, and then if that connection fails it automatically uses the on-device DNS blocklists, which can be customized which lists to use. It can also set different DNS rules / bypass filtering on a per-app basis instead of being forced to being system wide. It's been useful to allowlist certain domains for specific apps only to let them work.
