Folks have already pointed out the whole "multiple teams of sled dogs" thing.

The dogs also weren't delivering vaccine. They were delivering diphtheria antitoxin, which is a treatment for diphtheria, not an inoculation. The kids were already sick.

There was technically a vaccine for diphtheria then (it was invented in 1923, two years before this epidemic), but it wouldn't have saved anyone who'd already caught the infection.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 11 months ago (1 children)

people really do not understand what vaccines do

[–] justcallmelarry@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 11 months ago

Yuh-huh! They give autism! /s

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 93 points 11 months ago

Thats right, because Togo did it. Balto was just given all the credit becuse he did the final leg.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 44 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Well you're right. Balto didn't do it.

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 35 points 11 months ago (5 children)

Fuckin stolen valor asshole dog

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 53 points 11 months ago (1 children)

He was a good boy, don't blame him for what people did.

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Oh sorry, I'm biased against huskies in general. I think they're all assholes.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

They are, but dogs can be assholes and good at the same time. People, on the other hand...

[–] if_only@sh.itjust.works 26 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Fuck that. Balto's owner was the asshole. Balto himself and his team were sold and spent years malnourished and chained to a sled in a freak show wondering what they did wrong, and when they were finally "rescued" they wound up in a zoo. Well fed, but in cages while people gawked at them. Balto watched the rest of his team die one by one until he himself died blind and paralyzed.

Togo spent the rest of his life with his family. Neither dog knew they were famous or why, but Togo knew he was loved.

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago

I actually didn't know that, fuck our species

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 10 points 11 months ago

Goddammit. Why do even the good dog stories have sad endings. Every damn time.

[–] Sonotsugipaa@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 11 months ago

I don't quite remember the story, but I don't think Balto had much of a say in his portrayal

[–] Nangijala@feddit.dk 12 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I think Togo won in the end, because Balto and his sled team basically became freak show animals and later live museum exhibits, chained and starving, like they weren't living creatures at all. They were later rescued and ended their days as zoo animals. After Balto died he was stuffed and put in a museum.

Meanwhile Togo and his team went on tours, were given gold medals, continuing their lives as sled dogs and Togo got to retire in a nice kennel where he was bred and lived well until he was euthanized at the age of 16 due to health complications.

Don't feel bad for Togo. He may have been largely forgotten to history, but he sure as shit won the life lottery compared to Balto.

Also he finally got a pretty good movie starring Willem Dafoe.

The sled dog team led by Balto didn't deliver vaccines. The vaccine for Diphtheria didn't exist in 1925.

They delivered diphtheria antitoxin serum which was the only treatment at the time.

The image has a good sentiment though. The Florida change is just more undermining of public schools to push private charter school enrollment. These bozos in our government voted in vouchers to directly subsidize the businesses they themselves are invested in.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It did exist. It was developed in 1923.

[–] syreus@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It was initially discovered on the other side of the planet in a french lab in 1923. It wasnt widely adopted until the 30s. But yeah it technically did "exist". In hindsight I should have just said it wasn't available.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 11 months ago

Just have the dog run farther 🤷‍♂️

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 25 points 11 months ago (6 children)

We have to draw a hard line with these traitors. Mandatory vaccination for everyone entering decent states from traitor states.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

Good reminder to give that game another chunk of my life.

[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 18 points 11 months ago (2 children)

They don't have sled dogs in Florida.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 40 points 11 months ago (2 children)

soon they won’t have kids either

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 30 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Probably for the best… No child should have to live in Florida.

Feel bad joking about it but it sounds like a cutting cost program. Moving from No kids left behind to just no kids left

[–] Rusty@lemmy.ca 4 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Do they use sled alligators?

It was actually several different sled dogs that made the trip and Togo did the longest and most difficult part. There's a movie about Togo on Disney+

[–] knight_alva@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Been a while. Was it a vaccine? I thought it was penicillin he was hauling.

[–] knight_alva@lemmy.world 34 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Looked it up. We are both wrong. Apparently it was a specific antitoxin serum for diphtheria. Still not a vaccine but also not penicillin.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

Makes sense. Unfortunately diptheria will be swelling soon

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Antitoxin serum!? You gonna tell me what I should put in my kids bodies? Hell no! That's communisocialism

[–] knight_alva@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

Brother bear don’t treat me like I can read. Communowhatever is for hippies.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 10 points 11 months ago

Listen, smart arse, ive never been deathly ill in all my life, so what was the point of getting all these vaccines?

Checkmate, big-pharma bootlickers.

[–] WilloftheWest@feddit.uk 5 points 11 months ago

I’m not sure this is the case, but I like to imagine that the statue is polished from people petting it.
