Shoofly pie is a type of American pie made with molasses associated with Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. While shoo-fly pie has been a staple of Moravian, Mennonite, and Amish foodways, there is scant evidence concerning its origins, and most of the folktales concerning the pie are apocryphal, including the persistent legend that the name comes from flies being attracted to the sweet filling.[1]

Shoofly pie comes in two different versions: wet-bottom and dry-bottom.

What’s the difference between wet-bottom and dry-bottom shoofly pie?

Wet-bottom has a gooey molasses layer at the bottom, adding more moisture. Dry-bottom is more cake-like all the way through.

The recipe below is for the wet-bottom Shoofly pie that I fondly remember from my childhood.

whoa... haven't seen this since I was a wee'un. our next door neighbor would make this and mississippi mud for cookouts, they were both stellar.
