I read the article and still a bit confused (I'm no email expert). Is the practical benefit of using EWS? I've got a Microsoft account email, but it has been working fine, I presumably set it up with IMAP/POP?
In practice many Exchange enterprise admins disable or restrict protocols other than EWS. This feature allows you to use Thunderbird anyways and will also enable calendar sync in the future, another often restricted part.
My work Microsoft account doesn't work at all with Thunderbird. With my previous employer it did, but now my only option has been webmail.
I really hope this fixes that. Haven't looked into it yet.
They should also add support for Unified push. More apps need to embrace it! Currently there are no notifications at all.

They implemented it with EWS, a protocol which will be retired next year. Literally implemented it with less than a year before it breaks...
Nice but id love if they supported jmap next.
The absence of JMAP support seems even more strange when considering that the Thunderbird team is planning to sell email hosting with server software (Stalwart) that not only supports JMAP but seems to have a strong focus on it.
The Thunderbird Pro team even made a blog post today with pictures for the Thundermail account dashboard, one of which shows JMAP info: https://blog.thunderbird.net/2025/11/thunderbird-pro-november-2025-update/
