I’ve been using the notes app to write short thoughts, notes, poems, random ideas, etc and have found it really clunky for this. It has no simple way to edit formatting while typing or after, and a few other designs that seem to distract me. Wondering if anyone else had found this also, and maybe looked around for a better app?

Obsidian has very rich support scripts and workflows documented for MacOS - I highly recommend it

Sounds good, I’ll check it out too. Presume it plays nicely with linux as well then, do ya know?

There’s an official flatpak in flathub so yes.

Also it uses plain text markdown files so you can see the notes in whatever. So yeah Linux friendly.

Edit: you may need to get obsidian sync. Haven’t looked into this in awhile.

Good to know, thanks!

It does! Basically any package is offeted. There's also a mobile app for Android and iPhone. Just take a look at obsidian.md

I use Joplin. I sync it with my nextcloud instance.

Notability for handwritten notes. Obsidian for everything else

Seconding Notion. It's infinitely configurable, which can be a bit of a learning curve. Once you get the hang of it though, there's nothing I can find to replace it. Literally. I have tried.

I've been through Evernote, Apple Notes, OneNote, and Notion.

I highly recommend "UpNote" which is cross platform and has awesome sync. You can pay a small monthly fee or grab it for the lifetime fee which is incredibly affordable. I recently switched over for work and personal and I'm so glad I did.

I tried every app under the sun, I just need an app that can scan documents as well as Notes do; and that can do file versioning. I haven’t found anything like that yet.

I actually went back to the default notes app, it’s gotten really good and I‘m getting tired of expensive subscriptions.

It really depends what all you want to do with it. One of my favorites is craft. Their website is craft.do. They’re very feature rich, and offer almost as much versatility as notion, but unlike notion it lets you sync with your iCloud storage. If you can afford it therir premium plan is even better.

Try workflowy. It is the most simple and effective way for me to store my thoughts.

How about AnyType? https://anytype.io/

Although, no pencil support 😞

If you take notes on many meetings, Agenda has been the best for me.

@wagnerst @apple_enthusiast Did you taste other options? Which one?
