Good Samaritan laws doesn't protect stuff the donor has reason to believe is unfit for human consumption.

Also, just cook the lettuce.

Yum! Slimy lettuce!

Genuinely, I don't know how you would go about cooking lettuce into a dish. Spinach or kale I get since they are tougher leaves, but I can't say I've ever heard of cooked lettuce.

Lettuce goes really well with a lot of Asian soups

[-] Bubs@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

That makes sense, I can totally see that.

Soup, you can also just stirfry at high temp, it will still be crunchy if you fully cook it in about 90 seconds at like 375 degrees.

Asians have been boiling greens for a while. Just do it.

It's a traditional dish in the southern Appalachians and is called kilt (killed) lettuce, usually made by pouring hot bacon grease over lettuce.

Fry some cubed potato in the grease first, maybe throw in carrot and other veggies, then add to the lettuce for a really good, but unhealthy salad.

Mmmmmm cooked lettuce, my favorite. Also NGL green leaf veggies are something I get direct from the farmer although I'm now living in a drastically different society than western society with mechanically processed and bagged lettuce.

Cook the lettuces....wow, what cuisine is that?

[-] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

I don't know the specifics here, but not all lettuce is affected.

I made a mistake from the get go. I didn't even notice the lettuce was in Taylor Farms boxes. Figured it could have been from an unaffected supplier. But that's not the case.

Nope, every last leaf. /S

Is this horrific or hilarious or both? To anyone who has actually spent time with elderly there's more than a few who want to pass on and their body just keeps on living regardless of their choices. I guess the ultimate judgement depends on the situation.

I've been hearing news of this and wondering, can't people just disinfect the lettuce?

[-] SpacetimeMachine@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

A lot of times food borne illnesses are grown into the plant. It's not something you can just wash away.

[-] Ilixtze@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago

My family is from a rural area and we used to grow vegetables or pick from open parcels. Washing vegetables throughly and using disinfectant drops was a regular practice in our kitchen. My mother always hammered into us to be extra careful when preparing certain produce. We never had stomach problems and we ate a lot of vegetables; Did we have natural resistance to parasites or were our parasites "not grown in?"

[-] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 6 points 2 months ago

I just rinse vegetables and never had any issues but I'm in Europe and we have laws and stuff.

[-] SpacetimeMachine@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

It's likely they just weren't grown in. I work in produce and the last few times we had issues with E.coli in Romain lettuce (not us specifically, I mean the US in general) we were told that having washed the lettuce or not did not matter. As the ground itself was contaminated before the plants started growing. To note, you also likely washed your produce far better than the average person. You would be amazed at the amount of customers that don't know that they should wash stuff thoroughly.

[-] Nalivai@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

That's the fun part, those parasites are relentless as fuck.

[-] Ilixtze@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago

It's odd , because my family would would regularly consume freshly picked produce from open parcels; We never consumed packaged produced and we barely ever got sick from parasites; I would go for years without stomach bugs. My mom and grandma were very clean when preparing vegerables; Washing and disinfectant drops. So I keep wondering if this is something new and meaner that a lot of sketchy produce we consumed in our home? Like does this resist through washing and disinfection?

[-] Nalivai@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Yes, it's a relatively new outbreak of a relatively obscure parasite that was more or less contained before the containment procedures were dismantled by anti-knowledge Trump appointees.

From what I understand it's a big maybe. If it's a head of lettuce, maybe you'll be ok if you get rid of the outer leaves. If it's loose in a bag... if you wash it for like 5 minutes, maybe it'll be ok? Actually cooking it would be safer, but who cooks lettuce?
