Oh shit, I completely forgot canvas was on.

[-] flamingos@feddit.uk 6 points 1 month ago

A lot of fighting happening over that white cross flag.

Yeah, @SlicedOrange@feddit.uk is concerned that the Hello Internet podcast flag could be misinterpreted as a hate symbol.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_cross

Do you think it's a cause for concern?

[-] flamingos@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago

It's not what my mind jumped to when seeing it, but I can defiantly see Orange's concern.

Since when was the Jerusalem Cross a hate symbol?

[-] flamingos@feddit.uk 4 points 1 month ago

It's literally explained in the article.

I did a bit of googling since making that comment, apparently it is in the American south.

I really hate how fascists keep stealing symbols. I believe they've been doing it from their inception. I believe I read a while ago that even a variant of the Celtic cross had also been used as a hate symbol as well.

Personally my mentality is "don't let them have it". If fascists use a symbol, in many cases we should continue using it so their attempt at hijacking it fails.

Although I still wouldn't really associate the Jerusalem cross with the UK, moreso just generally a symbol of historic/traditional Christianity

I do agree with claiming symbols. Although, I think context matters a lot. A swastika on a Buddhist statue is great. A swastika on a skin-head's forehead sends a different message. In the same way, I think this symbol in black on the British flag could be misinterpreted. I think moving it off the flag was the best option for everyone.

Ehhh I would be kind of wary about a black cross like that on the British flag, do you have any screenshots?

My church has the Jerusalem cross incorporated in it's bookplate, with symbols and writings related to the history of The Church Catholick, so usually I'd associate it with that.

The British flag is already a Christian symbol, it doesn't need an extra cross

[-] SlicedOrange@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago

Here's what it looked like:

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 1 month ago

Ah yeah that looks well dodgy so it does

I haven't really seen a cross like that before, it's lacking the four evangelist crosses of the Jerusalem cross

[-] SlicedOrange@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Would like to reach a consensus on this. I know that some see it as the Hello Internet flag. But I think it looks more like a Cross Potent: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_potent https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_cross

I don't think that's a good look on a British flag, as it's a symbol of Christian militarism. I'd propose we keep the other Hello Internet flag, but remove the Cross Potent, or move the cross to somewhere off the flag.

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Personally I wouldn't use a cross potent to symbolise the UK (although it is popularly used by Anglican Christians), but the British flag is literally a combination of the flag of three saints, lol

or move it off the flag

Can we redraw it to the left of the 'HI', so it's further away from the British flag?

I had seen thread, but until the new one starts I'm fixing the canvas to match the template and not overwrite others' art.

[-] SlicedOrange@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'd love your help to build the new cross to the left of the HI symbol. Currently I'm using all my pixels fixing your overwrites to the flag though. Could we work together on the cross?

[-] Deebster@infosec.pub 3 points 1 month ago

I see a too-tall box starting, I'll join in there.

[-] SlicedOrange@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

@threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works - could you send a template for the new HI Cross? And update the Feddit template?

[-] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

@flamingos@feddit.uk @Deebster@infosec.pub @Flax_vert@feddit.uk @matelt@feddit.uk

Sorry for the delay, here's the new template. HI cross flag in new location, and a few other small fixes:

I did my part and held guard for 15 minutes. And then I made Wally's eye's red.
