Bathing in cologne/perfume is the issue, body odor or not.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 56 points 5 days ago (1 children)

flashbacks to high school where some of the boys smelled... bad... like skidmarks and not showering for 5 days mixed with half a can of Lynx Africa

It's both, it's both.

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

It can be both, but I've definitely been punched in the face by pure cologne/perfume on multiple occasions. Probably even more often than I've ever smelled BO equally as bad, including my own on those lazy stay at home days.

Though I do try my best to not get within smelling range of others regardless, so maybe cologne just has a larger radius most of the time. I'm definitely not sniffing pits to see how their BO mixes with what ever extra rank they've added...

I read a long time ago to do 1 spritz of cologne to the middle of the chest (for guys), ideally right after showering. I think the body heat and it usually being covered up by clothing helps with the overall scent. Can't remember the details.

Also, mom told me when I was a teen, "The only person who should be able to smell your cologne is the person hugging you." That's always been my guide.

[–] FUCKING_CUNO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 5 days ago

When I was younger I was told, "your cologne should be discovered, not announced."

[–] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I do 2-3 sprays on my left wrist, dab my two wrists together, then dab my wrists on my neck. Still follows the same rules of only the person hugging you should smell your cologne.

I have no idea what’s better, but I just looked it up, and people recommend NOT rubbing it on anywhere because it can cause the fragrance to change because of heat, so just dabbing it on is fine.

[–] Nindelofocho@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

It can also depend on you body chemistry some colognes will smell better on someone else but maybe not you. Ive found it good to get a third party’s opinion after youve been wearing it for a couple hours so that most/all of the alcohol has evaporated and the scent has time to set in. Some sents can go really stale where others can mature quite nicely.

[–] CoopaLoopa@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 days ago

If you ain't glistening, are they even listening?!

That sprintz trick and the advice u were given are solid but I also wonder If it is too much to wear cologne in summer heat..

[–] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 37 points 5 days ago (3 children)

If I have to travel by public transportation and I need to decide between someone who thinks they're using perfumes moderately or a homeless drunk with shit in their pants - it's always the drunk. Sure shit, piss, sweat, human-grease and old substances are nasty and unpleasant smells. But those don't cause migraine and asthma for me.

[–] diegantobass@lemmy.world 31 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Instant sharp pain to the temple, visual auras immediately blur half of the vision, brain shuts off, great experience

[–] raman_klogius@ani.social 21 points 5 days ago

Being a walking chemical warfare should be a crime against humanity

[–] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 7 points 5 days ago

Sad to hear you got the auras too!

[–] state_electrician@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ugh. I've had a teacher who wore so much perfume, it made my eyes and nose itch. But I've also experienced homeless people who made an entire bus unusable. It's just both too much.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

(any decently sized) city already smells like piss and shit though

[–] BandanaBug@piefed.social 5 points 5 days ago

I has this experience this morning. Still haven't recovered. Feel bad for the guy..

[–] ClownStatue@piefed.social 35 points 5 days ago (1 children)

To be fair, if you start regularly showering and keep up with the same amount of cologne, the cologne will become the problem. As it is, the cologne is a problem, along with at least one or two other more serious problems.

[–] KindnessIsPunk@lemmy.ca 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yep anyone who's played in any amount of card game tournaments knows this

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 5 points 5 days ago

Or gone to smash tournaments. Luckily the weekly I run doesn't have a lot of stinkers but there have been a few over the years.

[–] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 19 points 5 days ago

Nah,the cologne is just as much of an issue

-signed, someone very sensitive to smells

[–] semperverus@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Wipe yourself down with 90% isopropyl. It kills the bacteria that makes the stench for a day or two, and wipes away any residual oils that might be rotting on your skin.

Make sure you get the worst offending areas like your pits, the back and sides of your neck, your back, and downstairs.

Be careful around the nether regions though, you are in for a very unpleasant burning sensation the more bacteria there is.

But you will smell so much better (i.e. no odor) and it feels better too.

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago

No. It's both. Too much perfume or cologne is almost as bad as just bad bo or a mix of the 2.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 16 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Just let me smell the BO without the stinky cologne. 😬

My teenaged boys haven't learned this lesson yet. I've tried telling them not to overdo the body spray/ cologne/ whatever, but they don't seem to believe me.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 13 points 5 days ago

Pay a girl to walk by them and go, "Oh, smells like a dead animal" to herself. A few coughs would help.

That should give your boys the heads up that they reek.

I'm pretty sure that's what my parents did to me! Ha ha ha ha... :-(

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 13 points 5 days ago

Most high end fragrances also sell scented deodorants

Bathing and using the deodorant is the best option. You won't overdo the scent

[–] Soapbox@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 days ago

Bad BO makes me wretch.

Cologne and Perfume gives me a headache and clogs up my sinuses.

With those powers combined.......

I'm physically ill from someones olfactory assault.

If I can smell a person at all from more than 3 feet away. I instantly have a negative opinion of them.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Helloooooooo high school PE memories of the locker room getting fogged with Axe body spray

now listen here. my musky odor smells exactly and precisely like a beaver's anus, crossed with bacon, which as you might recall shares a scent with vanilla. in fact it is called vanillin. then crossed with bacon. my stench has been called by seventeen heads of state, princesses and poodles, and i now begin to quote thusly, "sexilicious". I have finished the quote. I require neither parfum nor cologne to cover any bee oh.

[–] solidheron@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 days ago (4 children)

I practiced the art of hoe-bath. Wash my genitals, wash my pits and smell goes down by a lot

[–] SillyDude@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I was working in a situation that was hot and we had a lot of iso alcohol on hand. When you inevitably get too stanky, we would soak something like a paper towel in iso to scrub our pits and crotch. Makes you feel real warm for a bit and probably 10x my chance for ball cancer, but that would kill anything making stank.

George Carlin: "armpits, asshole, crotch and teeth." I'd add feet too, because, they nasty.

I haven’t worn cologne since Drakkar Noir in 1992

[–] baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)

i use aluminum deodorant mostly to prevent sweat, not to smell a certain way. i know there's some you can get at pharmacies that might not smell, but i just get the "best" regular deodorant that stores have.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 6 points 5 days ago

I miss antiperspirants too. The non-metallic ones just don't cut it

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

There's also the crystal sticks. They're very effective and don't smell like anything. Used those for a while but had to switch, because my skin didn't like the higher aluminum salt concentration.

I both stay very clean and use a range of scents, luckily no one's ever complained I give them headaches and I usually get told I smell really good. I work with a lot of stinky people, but honestly sweat based BO isn't the most common issue, it's usually the smell of cat urine which keeps me a thousand feet away from the culprit or the familiar smell of someone who hasn't washed their bed in a while and came to work straight out of it, I call it "sleep smell"... and that one's starting to give me a weird complex because a really hot girl smells like it a lot and I'm starting to like a nasty smell... 😅

[–] untorquer@quokk.au 8 points 5 days ago

Of you like a nasty smell then that's one less thing in life causing you frustration and discomfort 😉

HARD disagree. Artificial scents can easily be overwhelming, and even with bad BO, I’d rather not have the cologne on top of that.

[–] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

But that's what the meme is saying

Ohh I misunderstood I understand now yeah my sister gets insane migraines from scents like that she's had to change jobs and stuff because of it before.
