I have a PocketBook reader that doesn't support Kiwix. Would need an EPub or another primitive text format. I know a tool to save an archive on epub exists, but no already packed thing with a top 50000/100000 collection.

Kiwix app doesn't seem to be an option. It supports EPUB, and Wikipedia has an option to compile articles to EPUB. Are there pre-compiled books?

Imagine you are a popular content creator on PixelFed, many followers, but many stalkers also. You don't want people to know where you live. One day you post a picture of the sun out of your window. Exact time is attached in metadata. Assuming GPS metadata is stripped, can someone, using inclination of the sun to the horizon, Nautical Almanac and some math calculate your latitude and/or longitude, and to what precision? Assuming also meteorological data archives on cloudiness, etc.

Feelings I had for my classmate were obviously one-sided (pretty sure of it), so I made a reasonable decision to never confess to not make things awkward. In a few years since we graduated I finally moved on, although I never loved anyone this much since.

Yet all this time I had a desire to tell her about them. I would definitely want to know if someone loved me this much ever. Would she? I don't know. I don't even know if she is in a relationship right now or not.

I would really want to cite some scientific study that "Over 80% of girls have their self-confidence lifted after being told they were secretly admired (p<0.05)", but can't find one.

A typical budget plan offers perks in roughly these proportions (per month):

It may be 300, 500, but I've never seen more than 1000 SMS even on 100 GB plans.

An SMS is limited to 160 bytes. Hence one GB of network bandwidth is equivalent to 6250000 SMS. 500 SMS limit is not even a thousandth of a percent dent on the mobile data limit.

What comes to phone calls, a single SMS could fit in half a second of audio dial-up way.

Why not increase the limit?

This hypothetical "would you rather" question pops up on Reddit and Lemmy once in a while, and every time the popular answer is the latter, implying risk of sexual assault. As if in a world of women there won't be enough ready to do the same. Yes, women statistically, on average, less prone to desire to commit a sexual assault, but it doesn't matter if one in ten or one in a hundred is ready to do this if no one else wants to stop them.

Why would they? While sexual assault by men against women is one of the few unforgivable sins in our culture, with huge prison sentences and no life in prison from cellmates, with saving a woman from this being one of the most powerful trops in literature to show characters's nobility and a proper reason to award a civil medal, rape of men by women is treated as a joke or a comedy trope. It can't even be called "rape" according to many dictionaries and legal codes, e.g. the British one.

Would whatever left of police (and there are few women employed in police) actually protect you in this case? Or is it more likely to be yet another “Raped? Baby, men can't be raped” case?

I'm curious to see how the compression dictionary is formed for a given piece of text, what bits are allocated for each piece, etc. Found these for Huffman, but not for modern ones like zip/gz/brotli etc.

I hope that's open-ended enough. I've seen very similar questions posted here before, and there's no compression-specific community.

When I first joined Lemmy, I opened instance list and picked the instance when the easiest sign-up: lemmy.org. Then I wrote posts and comments to nothing for a week before realising it was defederated by all major instances and nobody sees my content. Ironic: I quit Reddit over a shadowban and my whole instance appears to be shadowbanned here. Then I joined an instance with downtime spikes resembling brush bristles.

I don't want to leave it up to chance this time. Pixelfed offers me these two options on sign-up. Which one is better?

I was about to install PixelFed, listed in Google Play as a 13-MB app, but it demanded to delete apps before I free 500 MB. Similar thing happens with F-Droid, although it gives less data. Why? Does it not, like Flatpak on PC, list dependencies? But that's dumb; plus, no dependency for a browsing app may take 500 MB of space, and the demands aren't getting smaller when more apps are on device.
