I want to know how that photoshoot went down.

"Hey, Yolanda, we'll give you a thousand bucks if you let some guy who couldn't make it in Hollywood blow smoke in your face from a few inches away. But you have to pretend you like it."

Normal Tuesday for a model working in advertising. Except for the thousand bucks part -- probably a lot less than that, usually.

Tomorrow, she'll be asked to bite into a hamburger as erotically as possible.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

To pretend to bite, because advertising food is covered in poison.

They need to get "creative" when the food will be under hot lights for hours, being photographed. I don't excessively detest that. When it comes to someone eating it, they generally use a real, but idealised item (e.g. the very best bits of lettuce, artistically arranged).

One of my favourites is MasterChef. The cooks actually make several dishes. 1 is immediately tasted, 1 is purely for close-up shots. The last is for extra material. They need more from the judges, or cover for issues. They often have to do a reshoot, only with cold food. They need to act like it's the fresh dish they dried previously.

You can tell his in some shows. They are remarkably dainty in their mouthfuls, despite raving about it.

Very little food is wasted in shows like that. The camera crew etc happily make short work of it.

Not anymore, well, ok not as much.

It's adorable that you think that she'd get paid anything like $1,000.00 for that ad. Quick search shows that an art model made about $12.00/hour. A top model like Twiggy could make $30,000.00 a year.

It's also amusing that you think that getting smoke blown on you was considered abnormal at the time.

[–] EnmebaraGuesser@piefed.ca 6 points 4 days ago

Haha yeah I thought just after I hit post, she probably got WAY less than $1000. Even inflation adjusted, probably still not.

Back in the smoking days, they'd say blowing smoke in someone's face is code for you wanna do it right now. We used to talk about it at parties. None of us understood who it was code for. Probably swingers before us punkers in the 80s. Anytime you did it on accident, people would crack jokes like hey now you gotta go screw your buddy Steve or your sister or whatever. Kind of like accidentally giving someone a green m+m.

I remember that being a thing back in the 60s - it was supposed to be super sexy. Of course it was anything but. We all smelled of stale smoke back then though. Our parents all smoked (my dad didn't, but he was an outlier); there were ashtrays everywhere, including in cars and planes; you bought cigarettes by the carton and the brand defined you. I started smoking at 15 or 16. Totally normal.

is code for you wanna do it right now

Different times I guess. Hard for me to imagine anything less sexy than getting, or for that matter giving, a snoot full of cigarette smoke at close range.

Maybe it's something that makes sense if you're a smoker?

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

Just saw Carrie Bradshaw swallow Mr. Big's smoke ring after their cheating sex.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

It seems really rude.

[–] TomMasz@piefed.social 4 points 4 days ago

They probably saw it in some old movie.

[–] 0x0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Odd, because blowing smoke up someone's ass is somehow much more G-rated.

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Blowing smoke up someone's ass is a way to stop them from drowning. Or it was.

The past is stranger than I am even capable of imagining.

The decline of this practice and the recognition of the harmful effects of tobacco led to the figure of speech "blowing smoke up one's ass", which means lying to someone to flatter them.

TIL.

Sounds like a dom/sub porn intro.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 11 points 4 days ago

"Blow in her face and she'll follow you anywhere."

I'm pretty sure I dated her before the restraining order.

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I like that the pack says "about 5 for 25¢" like they don't know how many are in the box.

[–] EnmebaraGuesser@piefed.ca 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Haha yeah that got me too. "Might be 4 plus a half cigarette remainder. Might be 5 and 2/3. But around 5 somewhere, we are pretty sure."

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 days ago

"Joe on the factory line mighta grabbed one outta your box for his lunch break. 4 is basically 5. Just go with it"

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Ir depends, sometimes Eddy would have a couple too many at lunch, and you'd get a series of boxes with only three, if that. Sometimes he'd somehow pack seven in there. Five is an average.

[–] Hazmatastic@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I mean, maybe when the math works out it's something like 4.83 for 25c or 5.11 for 25c. Probably the former, or else they would have marketed it as 5 for less than 25c or something

[–] Jayjader@jlai.lu 4 points 4 days ago

Now people exchale their grape/cherry/whatever vape and the whole room gets to enjoy it /s

Blow it in my face and the only thing you'll get is hands.

The only reason I'd follow someone after that is to burn their house down.

Allegedly.

[–] peteypete420@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago

I usually prefer for her to do the blowing, but im adaptable

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 4 points 4 days ago

Ah, yes. Get her addicted to second-hand smoke. As long as she never realizes she can buy her own cigarettes, she'll follow you around anywhere. It's the perfect plan!

[–] Archimedes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Same goes for spitting chewing tobacco.

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 3 points 4 days ago

I think I saw this on Graham Norton. Possibly episode where Jon Hamm was a guest.
