It was written by Andy Weir, the same guy who wrote The Martian, which went on to be a successful film starring Matt Damon.
Similar storyline; guy is stranded alone in space, has to science the shit out of everything in order to survive and make it home, despite odds of survival being practically nil.
Real science and math were implemented, not "Hollywood science" to drive a plot forward. Andy Weir did extensive research while writing his novels to make them as accurate as possible to real-world science, which is how he got noticed for his works and became a famous sci-fi author.
Minus the sandstorm on Mars. He admitted that weather patterns aren't strong enough on Mars to actually generate a huge sandstorm on the planet, but that's the only suspension of disbelief in the whole The Martian film.
But cloning human tissue for food? That's real science, even if it's a bit gross. But when survival is on the line, you do what you gotta do. Too bad he didn't have any potatoes on hand...
I saw the movie in theaters, and they literally had an ad for the audiobook before the movie. How did you not know there was a book?! It's a big part of what the movie is.
Also, this is one of the most accurate book adaptations ever. There's essentially no story missing or changed, but some context missing. For example, they have a climate scientist melt the ice caps to release methane, which he's been fighting against his entire life, because they need warming now. It makes it clear the movie is about working together to fight climate change, which is less clear in the movie.

The book is phenomenal. The movie is amazing, but needed to be at least 3 hours longer to cover everything in the book.
I'd say that's true for every book... Except Peter Jackson gave us those extra hours and still fucked it up.
It definitely is. Part of why I like miniseries more than standalone movies for deep stories. You can do a lot more in eight or nine hour and a half episodes than one 2 and a half hour movie. And with all of the flashbacks in the book, you could have nice clean stopping points for a miniseries, and really go into detail on those.
I actually enjoyed the movie more than the book, but I think that maybe be because I don't enjoy Andy Weir's writing style too much.
Can I ask what you liked more in the movie vs the book?
The biggest difference I remember is: Book opening has more science (which I like) vs movie has more happy ending/comedy. (More jokes. Grace seeing inside rockies ship)
It probably mostly stemmed from reading Artemis by Andy Weir. If you haven't read it, don't try. He tried to write a female main character, props to him for branching out, but it felt like every single chapter he had to write some terrible joke about her having sex. It was to the point where I wanted to give up on the book completely.
Also, I was reading Red Rising in parallel with Project Hail Mary, and I distinctly remember going through a part in Red Rising where the character had to kill someone he thought was sweet and didn't want to kill. The book went through his horror of committing the act and how he couldn't wash the blood off his hands because there wasn't enough water and it was a really heavy scene. Then I got the point in Project Hail Mary where Dr. Grace was like "I think I loved this woman, but I dunno, anyway into the airlock!"
I know that's not how it really went but the juxtaposition of those scenes made it come off that way to me.
The movie I thought did a really beautiful job painting the scenes. The music was great, the characters were great, the effects were phenomenal, really a solid movie. Did it fail in a couple of aspects? A little. Was the book bad? Absolutely not, still very good. All that to say I went in thinking I would like the movie less since I finally read a book before the movie, but by the end of it I really liked it. Even my wife who doesn't like Ryan Gosling or space movies really liked it.
That's fair. Have read Artemis. 100% agree that Wider can't write a female protagonist.

I like it, I'm currently in the the third book. Pierce Brown can write for sure. Im not typically into fantasy like that, I like more nonfiction or plausible fiction like Project Hail Mary, but it has grabbed my attention.
I get that. He definitely has a style that not everyone likes. But there was a lot of thing that were in the book

Like the beatle probes. They just kind of glossed over it in the movie, but that was the entire point of the mission and why Grace was never meant to go back to earth and was going to die in space. They barely mentioned that he wasn’t going home. That was like the entire second half of the book, but a hand wave in the movie.
I thought were critical plot points that got glossed over in the movie.

God that sounds like a dream job. I've contemplated it before, but in a world with luminaries like Jeff Hays it's hard to feel like I can ask anyone for money for narration.

You can't be serious? Yes there is a book, and just like with "the Martian" I'll refrain from watching it, since there's no way a.movie will do it justice.
You're right that movies never do the book justice but as someone who read the book and watched the movie, I fully endorse it. They stuck to the source material really well. Also, I won't lie to you, the movie The Martian might have been better than the book. The book was great but the movie just got to the point.
Agreed about PHM. Disagree about The Martian. The movie was decent. The book was far better.
I don't, they fucked up the ship, Rocky, and the whole movie felt rushed.
I'd give it like 3/5 stars.
How do you think they messed up the ship? And which one? I thought Rocky was spot on except for him wearing more clothes in the book.

The ship is waaay to big, and way too polished in the movie. The Hail Mary was 3 (not counting the storage crawlspace under the dorm) smallish rooms in size, not a sprawling advanced space station, every gram on that ship mattered, so there was absolutely no way they would launch an entire fucking IMAX surround screen experience for shits and giggles. The Mary was built as a rush project too, cobbled together from existing off the shelf components and simple structures. Humanity didn't have 10 years to design and build an advanced ship. I understand taking some creative liberties with the ship design. Stacking the occupants in coma beds was pretty neat, and I thought it was a nice touch compared to the description in the book, but fundamentally changing the entire structure, scope and parameters of this ship is a stretch too far. Having ample space, entertainment and privacy would have invalidated the need for putting the crew in comas to begin with.
Rocky's shape is wrong. He's not a tallish diamond thing, he's squat. Per the book "The carapace, which is roughly a pentagon, is 18 inches across and half as thick."
Whole movie felt rushed, would have been better as a series.

A plot point involving Antarctica is in there too that was completely cut from the movie.
That's an easy cut for time, it doesn't push the narrative at all. Excellent world building though.

That's brought up in the books, but the Eridian biosphere is absolutely loaded with heavy metals. It's pure poison for humans.
If all Andy Weir books are dry in the same universe, I'm sure that all missions will carry some live potatoes in honour of Mark Watney, even if they're just intended as a tradition rather than a real safety measure.
