Most recent console I have used (and still use frequently) is a Gameboy Color from 1998. Original hardware (I did replace the screen).
Last game I finished was Pokemon yellow on an original cartridge. Worked fine, after 25+ years (with a new cartridge battery).

I’ve never heard anybody else talk about this game. But on Sega Genesis, there’s this puzzle game called zoop. It takes a second or two to teach yourself how to play it. But it’s crazy Addictive

My PS2 resumes like normal

Yes? I recently considered trading in my old Xbox 360, but when I booted it up I discovered I still had around a hundred games still stored locally.
After the wave of nostalgia subsided, I realized how lucky I was. Keeping that bad boy forever.
Sony is legit the only company I know of that stores shit you bought on their servers and will delete your shit if you're not active on the account for over a set period of time (in their case it's 3 years, if I am remembering right). Nobody else has a time limit for inactivity.
I've been using my Hotmail account since 1998. I can log in right now and go back and read all the stupid emails my friends and I were sending each other in high school 28 years ago. And I've never paid a cent for that Hotmail account. And my cartridge games still have my saves.
So yeah, I do expect that.

they might not much longer, batteries and finite life and all that.
but at least you can slap new batteries in them and the game will still fucking work, and not permanently taken away from you because you took to long to go back and replay it.
Bruh I cleaned my PS2, turned it on after being in storage for a decade, and it remembered what time it was. That cell battery is a goddamn king
And of course, discs and memory cards. I'm sure some folks' digital PS2 mods are also solid, and aren't affected by one of the weakest links, the read laser.

Sure, if I connect it to the internet I expect all sorts to updates to be missing. But offline? 1 day or 100 years shouldn't make any difference. OK the CMOS battery might be flat.

The case in the tweet wasn't a hardware problem. Apparently the person's PSN account had gotten deleted during their 10+ years of not using it, and downloaded games attached to the account didn't work any more.

Imagine if some Sony executive broke into your house and stole the games off your shelf because you hadn't played them for a long time. Thats what happened here.

Paradoxically, I’ll open GOG to replay Riven or Ultima Underworld, and I’ll find my last save, and feel silly seeing the last place I got stuck.
I could start up sonic on my sega genesis right now.
If the PSN account was deleted, this is less a PS3 issue and more a digital software licensing issue.
Either way, it's Sony providing an inferior product
i would say that it’s a PS3 issue due to being dependent on licensing issues prevent a user from playing games they own

My PS2 has game saves from 2002 on it that still function.
I have pirated copies of Sierra online games from the 80s and some of them have saves made by the first person who uploaded them. Who were those people? No idea. But I would LOVE to know where they are now.
That's why I've never bought a digital game on console. For years, my strategy was to buy AAA games physically on console and indie games on PC via DRM-free services. Now that Sony is stopping physical disc production I won't have that option anymore, but luckily none of the AAA studios make anything worth a damn these days.
Haha, I was selling a whole racing chair/wheel/shifter combo for my partner's dad and he got it for the PS3, so it came with around 10 games. I used dirt to test it, ended up deciding to keep it for myself in the end.
BUT my account and downloaded games also worked, because I didn't hook it up to the Internet (which after reading this I shall never do).
That shit should be illegal. They should be charged with theft and treated accordingly, or at the least get the shit kicked out of them; the way we used to treat thieves in the good old days.
If 40 year old consoles can resume back to normal, so should 10 year old consoles.
However, it should be noted that the PS3 is now 20 years old.

Still have a slim PS2 and wouldn’t you know it, it still plays all the games I bought for it.

I fire my 8 bit Nintendo up every five years or so. As long as I blow in the cartridge I'm still good to go.
I've replaced the save battery on NES carts before and save keeps working. Gaming used to be cool. Now it's just a momentary money grab the company hopes you forget about.
