Very late but good to know; this and physical games and I'm officially a gog fan

[–] realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 7 points 3 hours ago

I'm wondering how long it can take to just port an existing launcher to linux? If I can remember right, the interface, store etc. is all just the embedded website, apart from certain elements. That's something a halfway talented developer could probably do within two weeks tops.

They confirmed they started working on it in 2014.

Without a percentage of how much they've accomplished in the last 12 years, it's hard to judge if they're still just 12 more years away, or 36 more years away...

They have a Windows app. How hard can it be to convert it to work on linux?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 hours ago (4 children)

Or two weeks away! Or 56 years! Or 52 minutes! Or 19 seconds! Or a thousand years!

The Windows copy dialogue of completion times 😂

I like your range

Since they announced that they’re working towards GOG Galaxy on Apple Silicon, this seems like a natural progression.

Whoever these people are, they’re fucking amazing, and I love them

Holy fucking shit, it's about time. I would've loved to see this 10 years ago, but better late than never.

Maybe I'll start digging into more of my GOG library once this is out. Yes, I'm aware Heroic exists, but I've never been a huge fan of it.

[–] prenatal_confusion@feddit.org 6 points 4 hours ago

If its open source I'll give it a try. Show us what you've got.

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 27 points 6 hours ago

They have said this before, I will believe it when I see it.

Nice, one of the main reasons I buy a lot of stuff on Steam is because it's easy to use with Linux distros.

[–] badgermurphy@lemmy.world 14 points 6 hours ago

I'd love a storefront API so I could use whatever client I want that meets the spec. At least I could know then what information is being exchanged.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 6 points 5 hours ago

Ten years too late for me. Gave up on them so long ago.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 47 points 9 hours ago

I'm doing fine with Heroic, no rush

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 23 points 8 hours ago

About fucking time

So will this include its own wine or proton wrapper or will we still have to set that up manually? 🤔

I could see value if I don’t have to tinker with that myself.

[–] Undearius@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago

Umu-Launcher could be used which would have the same compatibility as Steam.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago

See, all it took was removing CDPR from the picture. As soon as squeezing maximum possible profits stopped being the only priority, development of a Linux client began.

The momentum and attention Linux is getting lately is beautiful to see. Hope it keeps going strong for long enough to make it mainstream.

I want playnite, on linux

Thats the dream!

[–] Lemmchen@feddit.org 0 points 7 hours ago (3 children)

If it's not open-source I'm not interested.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 12 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Steam isn't open source either.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 5 points 5 hours ago

How do you know Lemmchen is interested in Steam?

[–] Limonene@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

GOG is a platform for selling closed source software. If the client was open source, would you be willing to use it to buy and run closed source games? If so, why are the requirements for the client different from the games?

[–] Lemmchen@feddit.org 3 points 5 hours ago

There are open-source third-party clients already (at least for downloading/installing games). I don't see why I would want to downgrade to a proprietary app. That being said, I download games via the website, so I'm probably not the target audience anyway.

[–] badgermurphy@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It's probably interesting news for people already using Steam, since they've already made the concession to closed source software by using it, but youre right they its highly unlikely to be open source, especially since the Windows client isn't and the fact they'd be shouting it from the rooftops if it were.

Galaxy Of Games Galaxy

🤦‍♂️

Yeah I used to have a ROM game from a series called Galaxy of Games. And then Good Old Games (now gog.com) the game distributor. Maybe another GoG site, unless I'm remembering a Good Old Games mirror
