Mildly Infuriating

The new one is MUCH too white, but let's be honest, the before pictures are pretty ugly too. That wallpaper is gaudy as hell.

Another victim of big Small

Every time I see that movie I think how it shaped my idea that having such a nice and big house was normal and achievable, along with like 6 kids, and it was the average normal family.... I'm not even American.

I'm so much closer to the robber's reality.

I don't think this can be true. The house interiors in the movie weren't filmed on location. They were custom sets built into a school gymnasium. So everything in the "before" photos are sets and set decoration.

They both kind of suck tbh. The first looks like a nightmare to acid trip in and the other looks like a wizard sucked all the colour out of it.

Not going to lie, I like the clean look of the millenial house more. We collectively grew up in clutter, where your grandma would have weird porcelain dolls, or a cabinet to display her fine china.

My grandpa had a taxidermied pheasant, great horned owl, and a coyote pelt on his living room wall.

Nothing wrong with all that, it's just weird as a kid.

Our parents generation hoarded shit, because their parents lived through the depression. That has its own value but it gets overwhelming.

One looks cozy, the other institutional.

I hate it. I hate how there's no colour in the world any more. Houses are black and white, cars and black and white, clothes are black and white.

Why do people hate colour?

It was beautiful in the movie, but as someone who lived through that time, it feels pretty dated these days.

The new look is boring, sterile, and reeks of faux-minimalist wallet flexing. Not my thing either.

There's got to be a happy medium between everything has extra detail and patterns and bad sci-fi set.

Now add some pops of color with paintings/art, rugs, throw pillows, and knick-knacks and you've got yourself a home.

Sorry but that horrible wallpaper from the original is the mildly infuriating part.

The original house was a set built at a school. They covered everyhing is red and green to make it feel more like Christmas. The rugs, drapes, wallpaper, and everything wasn't put in for style as much as for matching the theme for the movie.

Before feels like Santa is real and I can almost feel the heat from the fireplace in another room.. After is the brutal truth that Santa never existed in the first place, the child in you is dead, and a reminder that we live in a cold, corporate hellscape.

You do know that the inside of that house in the movie was built on a sound stage. That only the exterior of the house was shot for the movie.

You can also see this on cars share i live. Next time you go outside, see what percentage of cars that are white, gray or black. Its the absolute majority. And then you have maybe 20% with different colors.

Its because people have been told that white, gray and black are elegant and you won't get tired of those colors.

i notice this issue whenever i watch new films--everything looks so sterile and uninviting. culture has taken on this showroom/instagram aesthetic that gestures to class but has no character, taste and doesn't look like anywhere where anyone would actually live; it's nowhere where anyone sensible would want to live, at least.

calling it minimalistic is disrespectful because that word and style aren't mutually exclusive.

Millennial grey, because it’s important that you don’t mess up your investment by personalizing it.

So warm and welcoming vs dead, cold and devoid of any personality. That does not feel like progress.

Now it really looks lonely.

It's just fashion, it comes and goes. We like novel things, out with the old, in with the new. "Maxxing" is coming around now, because "influencers" realized they could sell more crap if they showed more crap. Hold tight, we're heading back to a version of the before style.

I get it, though. The before style is very busy, especially the wallpaper. I like the warm tones, but not the busy patterns.

So it now looks like the inside of a refrigerator. Interesting.
