I ride past the gas station on my way to work and think "$1.69? Them's rookie numbers. Let's see if you can crack $2/litre."

[–] trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Lol. We're up to €2.35 here, which would be about $2.70 in US dollars

[–] VonReposti@feddit.dk 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

In Denmark all the gas stations started to panic during the last gas shortage because the signs only went up to 19.99, so they had to replace them with ones that could show 20 (DKK 20 = €2.67 = $3.07). We're just about up there again.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lol, this is millinium bug level of chaos :)

Petrol station technology limitations were why UK partially switched to liters in the early 80s: most pumps could only show/calculate up to £1.99 per volume unit.

[–] vaionko@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

Interesting, in Finland they rolled up to 2€ no problem. Most signs are fairly new with LED displays

[–] eatCasserole@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

See that's more like it!

[–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Reminds of the moments when paying for fuel, and SUV drivers waiting next in the queue weep when they see how much I pay, as a microbus driver. Yeah. I have double the usable space in my vehicle, and am paying less than half for fuel.

[–] eatCasserole@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Oh sure you have usable space, but is your powerful (not even a little bit insecure) masculinity being projected effectively??

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I've been driving an EV for 6 years.

  • I have never run out of electricity.
  • It hasn't caught fire.
  • I do not miss switching to 2. gear.
  • I do not miss the noise.
  • My penis size has not changed.
  • I do enjoy the lower cost.
  • I am mildy and smugly annoyed by the doll head nodders in ice cars who can't get an even acceleration when starting at the green light.
  • I do not miss standing in the cold at the gas station holding a nozzle for minutes to empty my wallet.
  • Charging time has never been an issue as it happens by itself when I don't use the car.
  • Range has never been an issue as I hate driving to other countries in non stop trips anyway.

Is there anything else you would like to know about driving EVs?

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Have you found yourself accidentally gesturing “my heart goes out to you” with an extended arm at a fascist rally?

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

No, but unrelated to my car, I did make googly eyes when I saw a bunch of Nazis on a corner of a street four years ago. I do regret it though.

In my half a century of living I have bever seen that before, so it came as a shock to me. Next time I will ensure to give them a good beating instead.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What drugs do you take for range anxiety? Or do you use therapy?

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Do you often run out of gas in your car? Does your phone often run out of battery?

If you're a functioning adult who can answer "no" to those questions, then you do not need to worry about range anxiety.

In my car, I can also look at the navigation system which has a nice big circle showing how far I can go. You see the dark area outside the circle? You must never go there, Simba.

I ask myself that every day in my dorky little EV. Sure, it will beat nearly any truck up to 60 mph, but it doesn't blow black smoke out of the side and it doesn't sound like marbles rattling in a steel can. I tried putting a playing card in the wheel spokes but it was still too quiet.

Maybe it needs speakers on the back like one of the new chargers.

[–] eatCasserole@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

speakers on the back like those new chargers

How anyone could drive one of those without feeling like a total doofus the whole time, I'll never know...

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

To be fair they seem to have trouble selling them.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm amazed that people keep trying to make evs loud rather than marketing the quiet as a selling point. Run an ad of a man quietly slipping out to get an anniversary present after he forgot or not waking his baby or something like that. These companies are great at manufacturing desire, I believe in their ability to do it for this

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Exactly, the quiet is the best part. Allegedly my EV is quieter on the road than a Rolls-Royce.

Sometime around 2020 they made a rule that they had to make some kind of noise. My car is older than that, and I have startled enough cyclists to understand why its needed.

[–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, doesn't growl and make an angry fuss. It's all so graceful.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

It's also, to me, relaxing.

I don't have to worry about the bands/clutches in the transmission, I don't have to worry about bad gas, I don't have to worry about what this or that engine noise means, I just have to plug it in.

[–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

My old one was a petrol mid-engine, real wheel drive, manual, no power steering, no power brakes, with twin sunroof. ;D

This sports car pedigree is adequate masculinity bragging rights. ;D

... Also, according to the advertising, it picks up 5 times as many women as a lambo. :D

[–] eatCasserole@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

That's a pretty genius ad.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Me, an e-bike rider, when the fossil fuel prices make the over 60% renewables energy costs to charge my battery skyrocket

My next bike's gonna be a touring bike (or similar) without motor assistance, though, so I'll be free to roam untethered both literally and figuratively 😃

[–] Zkuld@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah, make the most of the leg-engine!

[–] OhioComrade@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is why I charge my battery at work.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Boss makes a hundred, I make a dime. That's why I charge on company time.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I noticed that the chuds were hurting when they started asking questions about the little car I (used to) drive. Wanting to know how much gas it used. Wanting to know if it is reliable.

In 2005 I was riding a bicycle to work and loving it, sadly it's now a 70 mile round trip to work, and it would all be along roads that would 100% get me killed on a bicycle. Which sucks because I always feel so good after a decent ride.

Ive decided on harm reduction and sort of a new hobby - I bought one of the first production electric cars, a second generation Leaf. It was ridiculously cheap and it's easily rebuildable, even the battery. Its fun watching my supervisor sneer at the little car while also bitching about having to drive a diesel-powered 1 ton truck 80 miles a day for 5 dollars a gallon.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I drive a tiny ICE and yeah there are some things that don't fit in it, but I've shocked people with what I can fit in it. Add in a turning radius that shocked a friend and I'm firmly committed to the hatchback subcompact life. Going electric when mine dies too. Unfortunately I only get like 30 mpg

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I still have my little combustion engine car, a Mitsubishi Mirage sedan. 3 cylinders and a manual transmission, reliable as a hammer for the last 170,000 miles. My personal best was loading a 12ft long extendable telescoping handle.

Small car logistics is fun.

I prefer Italian Ubasil

[–] PorqueSan@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh you just wait, when they finish with the car drivers

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The pedaling tax is getting out of hand

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Don't you get enough sun on your bike rides? It's hotter than Satan's butthole out there in most of my country right now...

[–] ashenone@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Gotta get that nice even George Hamilton look going on

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

Why stop there? Go full Arizona porch lizard!

an old wrinkly tan lady

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

That's me at Home Depot loading 8 ft lumber into my Prius.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I pulled up to a gas station in my EV to hand some rando a coupon for gas I will never use. On the one hand, yes I was being nice, but also it was fun to flex on ICE drivers paying current gas prices.
