That's pretty much all a movie needs, really.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 73 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I'm a little more interested in it now TBH

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 21 points 1 week ago

Good! If you're interested in the sort of story, it's a solid movie.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

It was a weird one I thought. It has all the good elements I like - a sort of grungy vibe, ass-kicking woman protagonist, kill-all-sex-traffickers central theme - but somehow it was also kind of boring? I'm not entirely sure how they managed to pull that off TBH.

I think next DCU movie should just be Krypto. That’s Avatar levels of money.

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Krypto killing sex traffickers

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

As a side quest, Krypto can kill Sam Altman and Peter Thiel to help reign in crypto.

This one time I got too high and sat down to watch an entire season of Krypton. I think I was about 2/3 through the season before I realized I hadn't seen Krypto yet inn a series about him.... I giggled and continued watching. Anywho, I totally agree they should option Krypto!

Except the dog was poisoned and sad. It wasn't "awww doggie" it was "awww sad doggie." Also Supergirl didn't have her powers for like 3/4ths of the movie (due to her character's own stupidity). Like they couldn't write a decent story if she had powers.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

23-year-old with abandonment and self-worth issues behaves less than reasonably, more at 11.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

It's a general complaint I have about some of the mainstream attempts at Superman. "We've got to make him/her weaker." Is a common theme that has been done way too many times. Because in these people's minds, there is nothing interesting that can happen if Superman/Supergirl actually has their powers and wins. The drama, for these non-Superman fans writing the script, is in the hero losing their powers. They don't actually understand what's appealing about Superman in the first place.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I know what you're talking about but here it's rooted in actual character development. Nobody took her powers away, she wasn't taking care of herself, was reckless, and suffered the consequences. Sure at some point there was Kryptonite involved but even that could've been avoided if she had been more level-headed and less self-destructive.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I would like to see a situation that cannot be solved by strength alone. It feels like lazy writing to take that strength away. Kryptonite as a plot device is kinda old. But if you use it for a few seconds here or there, like Superman (2025) that's great. What I definitely do not want is a movie about Superman without his powers. Powerless for a situation? Yes! Powerless for 75% of the movie? No!

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 11 points 1 week ago

Good, because this movie isn't about either Superman without his powers or Supergirl without her powers. It's about a very young adult sabotaging herself because of her pain and overcoming her self-imposed restrictions to save others.

I think the issue was more DC's power scaling issues. It's kinda hard to write a compelling story for Superman or Batman at their peak, because they are, for the most part, invincible and flawless according to DC. I suspect that her not having the ability to access her powers for 3/4 of the movie was an effort to make her seem like a Marvel superhero with flaws and relatability. Unfortunately, DC doesn't know how to do that, as Marvel doesn't even know how to do that consistently. Power creep is a real problem if you can't just magic away the hero's basic invulnerability.

This is one of the issues that Invincible tackled quite nicely at least until the end of season 2. I haven't gotten around to watching season 3.

This meme is so confusing, do I read it top to bottom or bottom to top?

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This type of movie is only a drag if you are a sex trafficker.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (5 children)

It was a total waste. Now we have 2 people from Krypton on Earth. The only two. I expected a story about Clark and his hot blonde cousin working hard to repopulate their species. They don't even talk about it!

Like... come on. We all want to have sex with our hottest cousin. We don't because stupid society says it's wrong. But if we were the only two humans left so suddenly banging our hot cousin was something we had to do for the survival of the human race? Fucking JACKPOT.

What kind of a weirdo totally ignores the story we all want to see? It writes itself.

[–] sydd@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Have you ever heard of projection?

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Umm... duh? I saw the movie in a theater. That's how they show them.

Can someone explain what the aww doggie part means? Is it sex scenes?

[–] TheFlopster@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

No, it's Supergirl's dog, who is cute, then possibly dying, so they are non-sexy awws (either adorable or sadness awws, depending).

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 12 points 1 week ago

She has a cute doggie, it is the most harmless and wholesome of "aww"s you could imagine.

I like all that. Really liked what she did to that one jackass at the end--- made me like her a bit more.

Did not like dog being hurt, dog being left, dog almost dying. Did not like! 😭

Edit: omg I just realized why the Cons hated this movie! It's in the second line of the OP's post.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Her suit also included shorts under her skirt. SHORTS! Isn't that outrageous? How are they supposed to get pantyshots now?! /S

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Conservatives require cameltoe. Fucking disgusting, but entirely predictable behavior from the Epstien Class.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The dog sucked. I wish they used a real one. The cgi was just very rough, and I felt nothing for it all movie because of this fact.

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Perfect movie.

[–] ProdigiousInsanity@lemmus.org 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hmmm doggie? Which movie was this again? Asking for a friend

Lassie Has a Psychotic Reaction to Krokodil

[–] deft@lemmy.wtf 8 points 1 week ago

Movie was solid 7.2/10. People just cry all over because superhero, because woman, because "what if" or because of some dumb thing.

[–] ScriptSage@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago

I was loving this movie until it started being a superhero movie. It was a really cool scifi experience till then

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 6 points 1 week ago

I guess I should watch this.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's a lot like John Wick. Aww, doggie. Kill Russians. Aww, doggie.

Meh... still not going to watch it

It was... fine. The action scenes were pretty dull, though. Seemed a strange choice for a second movie. If you're gonna have Supergirl as your second movie it really has to knock it out of the park. I mean guardians was after like 8 MCU movies or something.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I thought lobo was the villain. Is lobo a sex trafficker in this movie?

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 week ago

No. He is not the villain. He is just a bounty hunter.

BTW, I really liked Lobo in Man of Tomorrow, the animated film.
