Seat up = male
Seat down = female
In large families it usually transitions back and forth so much that it becomes gender-fluid.

I am a dude and I always fully close the toilet when I'm done. Keeps the cats out. Less likely to drop something into it.
This is the dumbest nonsense
I grew up in a 5-person family and we had no trouble resolving this problem. Leave the lid down after use. It looks better, it's more hygienic, and it keeps the pets from getting into it.
My household was larger (still is) and there is never been a need to "resolve" this. The seat stays in whatever position it was in during its last use.

Ahh, the beginning of so many screaming matches growing up.
How is lifting or lowering the seat and/or lid worth screaming about? It's such a small issue, and you should really be looking before using the toilet anyways.
I'm a dude, and it isn't that hard to move the seat while you're facing it or just leave the seat down, sit, pee, and reduce how much spatter there is in the bathroom.
I do get the joke though!
With how much shit is taken, I'm surprised it's stuck around, honestly.
