New week, new weekly thread. What are you learning this week and how?

It's also back-to-school season, at least around my neck of the woods. Not sure if many students are here, but good luck to any we do have. And for the rest of us, let's carry that spirit as impetus to learn something new this fall.

I started portuguese a while ago. Coming from Spanish it should be a relatively easy pick up.

So far plan is:

a) Linguno for conjugation

b1) music for vocab (anki) b2) learn to sing some jobim tunes on guitar

c) grammar as needed

Down-the-road: some tv show or podcast or something; I think it's going to be less challenging than french to understand spoken from what I've heard already.

This is my first language with absolutely no formal or structured instruction, and that feels pretty cool.

If you already know Spanish well, it does seem like it should be an easy transition. But every language has some stuff.

Sounds like you've got a good plan laid out, hope it progresses well.

not sure if it counts, but I learned how to transcribe English using Tengwar, Tolkien's elvish script

Looked back at the Thai alphabet some, after not for a while. Starting to recognize a lot of the consonants, sorta. Pronouncing anything is tough tho.

Got lax in my Kanji Kohii habit, so I'm trying to dig back up through those flashcards. Reviews build up fast when you skip even a day or two.

Found some Doraemon manga at a larger used book store near me. They were like 2 bucks a piece, so I didn't think much before grabbing them. But on closer inspection when I brought them home, these won't help me learn Japanese, lol.

Yep! I've already invested almost 10 bucks, so now I have no choice but to spend the next decade learning it.

Really, I have considered trying to learn Chinese. After learning Japanese, the characters wouldn't be too intimidating, and it is one of the world's most widely spoken languages. But it's also just... a lot. Don't think I'm up for another language of that difficulty, long term.

Cleared the new cards in my Anki deck this past week, 7,600 Japanese words. Phew. Feels good. Review times are already 10 minutes less, and they'll keep decreasing. Between that and taking time off from work this week, I should have ample opportunity to get my N2 study back on track.

I've got a friend who recently sent me pics of some doujinshi (self-published manga/magazines/novels, etc.) and video game-related materials he bought on his trip to Japan. Fun change of pace to read.

A friend gave me a gift, and I guess it caused some mild OCD in me since I ended up being completely useless for a few days aftwards. Been bouncing back from that day. Already knocked down my entire Japanese vocab backlog, and restarted my Spanish Migaku cards (have about 200 more cards to review there).

Haven't touched Lojban/Irish in a bit either. I'm an an impasse for those though. On one hand Lojban is more of a personal goal, on the other hand I feel a lot more connected to the Irish language due to my heritage and etc. No one to speak with in either of these langauges, so it's making it hard to decide. Feeling more of an incline towards Irish just for the more apparent cultural/historical background behind it. But it also has poor resources for learners outside of formal education, so there's that too.

Trying to take things slow. So I guess it can wait for now.
