Donating money to food banks instead because they can make their money go further than you can prank
Came here to say this. Everyone I've ever talked to that worked at a food pantry has guaranteed me that they can get more food from $$$ than you can donate for the same $$$.
I'm sure that the economics could change, so if you can engage with you local food pantry and confirm their preference, that would be best. But, if you just want to drive-by donate $$$ > food >>> nothing.

That is a separate and still valid point. Even if you are visiting a food bank, you still have all your same allergies, sensitivities, and preferences. The food bank itself will have a better idea of what they need to hand out.
I'm saying that even if the food bank needs 20 cans of cranberry sauce, instead of you buying for $$$ and donating them, it is better for you to donate $$$. The food bank can then buy the cranberry sauce for $$, and also buy some green beans for the leftover $. Your dollars buy more of everything when you give them to the book bank instead of buying the products yourself.

on the contrary, they love that shit. Gives them an excuse not to legislate poverty away.
It's offloading the costs of reproduction and it's a contradiction. They need to lower their costs as much as possible while relying on others to not do that so they can always have fresh workers.
Note: it's more than just having kids; eating enough, studying, and sleeping are all parts of it.

I want to make something like this for my place, maybe a few, but I’m afraid of them being vandalized because I live in a conservative area.
I’m considering killing two birds with one stone by making it clear that they are under surveillance… by the people across the street who have a ring camera, and those are part of the law enforcement network.
Also I’m basically always home so not that much of a concern, really, I guess.
just add a Jesus somewhere on it or near it, or some bible verses about helping the unfortunate. If vandals do still vandalize, then they'll have to angry religious people to worry about

Why do you think conservatives would vandalize it? I have a hard time imagining that happening in the conservative area I live in.
Because there's a few little libraries near my place, and when someone is caught vandalising them it's the kids of the conservative family (also the adults, but mostly the kids) in the neighborhood.
As someone who lives in a highrise full of impoverished people, please stop pranking us with canned goods.
We have a pyramid of both canned and dry beans in the lobby. No one actually eats them, they just get thrown out to make room for more nonperishable goods the next food bank run.
I'd guess about 20% of what actually comes from food pantries and donations gets used and that's from perishable/frozen goods. We didn't get to this level of poverty by being pragmatic and resourceful.

Don't feel bad. My neighbors aren't opting to starve, just fortunately live in an area with enough food resources that even in the lowest national income bracket we can be somewhat choosy.
I've thought about making bulk pet food out of all the waste, because presently it just accumulates until the pyramid gets ridiculous and has to be thrown out, but it's always there in the lobby just in case someone is at that point of mental illness or just broken in spirit that it might be their last resort. Or maybe their recipe calls for 10 pounds of of chic peas. Eh.
