There has not been any point in history that Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries) has ever been a subsidiary or brand or Suzuki, nor has Mazda (Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd) ever been a subsidiary of Mitsubishi.

Neither Mazda nor Subaru are subsidiary companies, nor have either been owned by or owned Mitsubishi or Suzuki. And honestly, none of those are luxury brands either.
It is possible that some models from Mazda or Subaru have used parts manufactured by Mitsubishi or Suzuki in them, as parts sharing pretty common even today, but that doesn't make any assertion or subsidization. GM used Mitsubishi parts in Saturn cars, for example.
Seems like you remember some local dealers that had those cars on their lots and assumed a larger association between those manufacturers.
Maybe you are confused, or I am. Mazda and Mitsu haven't been together, nor Subaru and Suzuki.

I tried looking up joint commercials from the early 2000s for either of these brand combinations and found nothing at all. Plenty for Mazda, Mitsubishi, etc. each separately, but no joint ventures. Curious if anyone else, especially OP, can find anything?
