When viewing public content, like YouTube or Maps, sure you're right. But that's besides the point given that the post clearly refers to editors, not just viewers.
On cloud editors where my documents are non-public until I explicitly enable public access "for anyone with the link" - by using the share button - it's not much tracking but literally required functionality. Even if we ignore corporate crap, that also applies to privacy focused, self hosted options like Immich
Can't I just export to a file and share that? Yes, in some cases, but not in all. I might need collaborative features or I'm working on a weird type of document where I can't expect the recipient to have compatible native software installed, or it might be in a work context where my personal choices for software might be limited.

That's clearly not a social share button depicted in the drawing. It's an os / custom sharing button. Not to mention social share buttons don't necessarily load from the shared platform's own website, run javascript or track you across browsers.
Share buttons exist because people use them.
It sounds like you're both talking past each other re: is it the "share on Facebook" tracking thing, or the smartphone "share" button that is just how you export a file these days.

Which, given the context, made me think of the "share on Instagram" buttons you see on other Web pages, but not this picture.
This is just straight up wrong. If you see an "Edit in Canva" or whatever button in an editing suite or software by even a medium sized technology company, it's not a surface controlled and tracked by Canva - it would have been implemented by a developer working for the editing suite or technology company or whatever. Those kinds of features are usually part of user growth agreements in which one company pays the other (or reciprocally expects to refer a similar number of users) to be featured. Engagement is typically tracked internally for contractual reasons, but I've never heard of it being shared with third parties (because doing so would almost always violate privacy policies and open up the company to lawsuits).

Hey quick rant, I'm a professor and due to budget cuts they cut our MS Office so it's online only. I was already getting into non-slop software but now I need to check for compatibility using the browser version, since podiums only have Office and we're supposed to use that.
So what I'm trying to say is, I'm feeling this right now. Shit doesn't even have master slides or mathematical formula editing, ffs.

Enterprise Office in the cloud is stupid since security settings for businesses tends to break a lot of stuff that complex documents use. I got a three for one punch for my application I wrote because Office went online, Microsoft depreciated using IE in macros, and then my company put information I'd pull from the browser session into god awful frames (in 2025!). I said screw it, use what still works, I'm not chasing this anymore.
Haha, it's even worse in academics because anything from students is protected. Unless they host on campus, it's a violation even if MS super duper promises not to leak information. It's also why we can't use ChatGPT, though fools still do.
Edit: I mean for grading, asking a clanker is still fine but a terrible idea.

I used to use it to sarcastically denote something that's actually bad, but make it seem cheerful, which I think is how many people used it. I hate that it now means AI.

Not to chime in on your friendship, but sometimes those perpetuating negativities build a lasting impression that it's the only lens to see the world in - when it shouldn't be, even if both people are accustomed to the dark and sarcastic humor..
But yeah, I agree that's the usage I'm most familiar with too, like a magical tone that makes difficult things very simple, sarcastically. I know someone closely who also just used to use it unironically because 'it's pretty' and it had its own meaning. They also hate AI but I haven't asked their thoughts on this hijacking.
I personally don't hate it with a passion, but seeing it pop up everywhere from AI made software repos, to now just the mainstream icon for the "jump into my world now AI" button now has been from annoying to just surprising.. It's like the new version of the Notification or Email/New Message icons that we have seen adopted everywhere, but for AI.
I'm sure hundreds of hours of market research went into what symbol would best associate AI with ✨magic✨

It is funny that we used to have status bars at the bottom and horizontal main menu's back when we were rocking 1024*768 resolutions, and now at 2560*1440 app UI designers think they take up too much space and replace them with a hamperguy menu..

A colleague told me to „just use ClipChamp“ instead of an open source video editor, and it’s exactly that interface on the right. Obnoxious piece of corporate trash cooked up in a team that hates themselves, each other, and humanity. „Best“ of all, it puts everything in the Cloud and then you get an annoyed email from IT about your SharePoint usage.
I loooove that this whole "rearrange ur software how u like" thing is so widespread is software.
