It's kinda crazy how little I care. Although I do respect them for having provided the service for those who wanted it.

There's just nothing on Twitter that I want to read about. Mastodon is all I need for microblogs. I just wish more comic artists posted their content there instead of Twitter/Instagram.

[-] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 12 points 1 hour ago

Could Xcancel become a search engine with an "AI" that provides all the info in the destination pages? I.E. use the Google model?

[-] GnuLinuxDude@lemmy.ml 103 points 8 hours ago

it's really sad that so man people lingered on this dogshit website after that fuckhead elon musk bought it

[-] halezinflames@lemmus.org 44 points 8 hours ago

"But I won't be able to market!!!" The Onion got more coverage after leaving, you have no excuse

[-] bountygiver@lemmy.ml 20 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Ya, people follows where the content is, also people are lazy, so if you still post on x your followers will not migrate and you will see worse numbers on the new platform, but if you fully stop posting on x your followers will follow you to the new platform (you will not hit old numbers but those are inactive followers anyways).

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 8 points 5 hours ago

I deleted my account when Musk announced he was going to buy it and even then i barely visited the site or opened the app, then moved on to Reddit and now i'm here and if someone posts something short to read here then i'll read it, otherwise it's not important and not worth the effort.

[-] dev_null@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago

I hope you mean when he bought it, not when he announced it. He announces a lot of things all the time which never happen.

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 3 points 47 minutes ago* (last edited 46 minutes ago)

Nope i deleted it when he announced it because i didn't really need it, otherwise i might have waited a bit and i'm glad i fucked off when i did.

[-] iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app 4 points 4 hours ago

Long text is not important? Or long text on Lemmy is not important? 🤔

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 1 points 2 hours ago

If they copy/paste the whole thing that was on Shitter then i'll read it but if they copied only a part then that's all i'll read.

[-] iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app 1 points 2 hours ago

Ah, okay. I thought you meant that long posts in general have no value, not that you were talking about copying stuff from Twitter! 😅

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 1 points 2 hours ago

Yeah i'm not dealing with that shitshow.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

Could anyone explain what this xcancel is/does for someone who never used twitter?

[-] inari@piefed.zip 23 points 5 hours ago

It displays tweets without generating traffic to Twitter

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 26 minutes ago

Ah, OK. That's why they are pissed off.

[-] communism@lemmy.ml 29 points 5 hours ago

It will still generate traffic to Twitter in order to fetch the tweet. It's an alternative frontend for privacy purposes, so Twitter doesn't get your browser fingerprint, IP address, etc. It's all proxied through xcancel/nitter.

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 3 hours ago

However it generates only a fraction of the traffic that would otherwise reach twitter, and also makes it useless as it cannot be data harvested.

[-] 123@programming.dev 17 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

And you don't have to login to view stuff.

[-] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 35 points 9 hours ago

To me it is Twitter and all of twitter’s content is plain trash no matter where you read it from.

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 1 points 19 minutes ago

Sometimes i look at my shit because it can say something about my health. Despite the content being trash, doesn't mean there can be no value in being able to access it.

[-] AgentSeven@lemmy.zip 17 points 8 hours ago

I hope this means that Shitter is starting to be in some trouble.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 4 points 6 hours ago

Somebody in Xitter HQ is shitting themselves because Daddy Elon just made a demand that the business must actually be profitable this quarter.

Self host your own nitter instance while you can: https://github.com/zedeus/nitter

[-] cabbage@piefed.social 1 points 34 minutes ago* (last edited 31 minutes ago)

https://bird.makeup/ should allow you to follow twitter accounts from the fediverse. Obviously interactions don't make it back to twitter, but could be useful nevertheless. See for example @franceskalbs@bird.makeup. Unfortunately twitter is full of trolls, so many instances block bird.makeup to avid spam from seeping through.

It's not an alternative to xcancel as it doesn't allow you to read feeds you don't follow, but it's good if you want to keep up to date with what users post.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 10 points 6 hours ago

You better start believing in alternatives. You're on one.

[-] atx_aquarian@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago
[-] genzboomer@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

Bit of a shitty comment mate.

Acquire:

  1. taste

  2. books

[-] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 101 points 11 hours ago

Leave. It sucks since so much info and live news is often stuck there but people need to realize ot is a dying platform, the less traction any of its content gets, the better.

[-] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 9 points 7 hours ago

If anything of consequence happens on Twitter, you'll hear about it elsewhere.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 1 points 6 hours ago

100%

Plenty of Xitter screenshots even here.

[-] REDACTED@infosec.pub 45 points 10 hours ago

That's not an option because I'm not on X in the first place. I used xcancel to access information from government agencies and some brands since you cannot browse X without an account, and I deleted mine after Elon Musk bought it.

[-] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 4 points 3 hours ago

twitee.co still works as of now.

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 36 points 11 hours ago

Well, that also means you can’t verify if a post was actually made or not there. I stay the fuck away from twitter except through nitter if I’m checking a “source”. So now that’s gone I guess

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 19 points 10 hours ago

Honestly, genuinely, and 100% seriously, if it is a twitter screenshot, it is probably better to simply disregard its veracity. Twitter screenshots are 80% dunking on random vermin, 30% bot posts, and 20% faked. (Percentages reflect the vent diagram of fuck that is twitter) I used to verify, until I realized that the people there are simply not worth knowing.

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 10 points 9 hours ago

Well, the thing is like say you see someone share something outrageous that makes you ask “wait is this real? Did they really say that?” Being able to check veracity is important in the age of disinformation.

Also since I post a lot of comics I typically try to share the source. Now most artists have moved to other platforms, but their backlog might still be on that shithole. I don’t want to provide a link to that place, so being able to link to a proxy is preferred

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 13 points 9 hours ago

Is there actual evidence it's dying? For a while it seemed like the momentum was there but now I don't hear much about mastodon or even bluesky from normies.

[-] 1Fuji2Taka3Nasubi@piefed.zip 1 points 4 hours ago

Unfortunately I seem to hear much more mentions of Threads than Mastodon.

[-] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 7 hours ago

Mastodon and Bluesky will probably get another boost with this, then it'll go back to how it's been.

There are far too many bots for human account deletions to really make a dent in Xitter's numbers.

[-] TheMightyCat@ani.social 21 points 11 hours ago

I hope more people take this chance to leave X for good.

[-] Hubi@feddit.org 23 points 10 hours ago

The people using this service are the ones who already left Twitter.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 10 hours ago

Or never had one, and are just checking one thing. Then twitter says you need an account to view. So you use these alternate viewing sites. I did that a few times.

Appears to work, but it’s riddled with pop up ads that cover the content and are constantly reloading and jumping around. I hope xcancel comes back.

[-] pycorax@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Libdirect has a list of alternative frontends that it can pick from. I've been using it to redirect xitter links so I found that helps when one goes down.

Edit: I meant to say libredirect

[-] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 52 minutes ago)

Yeah, but the one on that list is what's been taken down…

I stopped using Twitter many, many years ago. It was just full of shit and a place for people that can't keep thoughts in their head, no matter how uninteresting and pointless they are to speak aloud.

I've been fine. Much better than those that still use it, as far as is clear to me. Just leave. It'll only be an improvement.
