It's kinda annoying opening the community and seeing posts made only by a single ~~person~~ bot that posts so much that actually genuine content get suffucated, i think we all know who i talk about (if not, it's Sanitation), they don't even link the original post (which i know it's not obbligatory but cmon..!) I can block them though so it's only mildly infuriating, though, it makes genuine posters have less comments (and so discussion)
Please, if you are a mod and read this, i ask to take action and if you are not a mod, please feel free to discuss about that with me and everyone else

I've been conflicted about Sanitation for a while.

On one hand, it's more content. I open Lemmy, and I see a dozen articles that wouldn't be there otherwise. Sometimes they interest me, and I read them. In that case, I suppose I should appreciate that it was shared at all

But on the other hand, all those posts rarely turn into conversations. Sanitation isn't hanging around to talk about what they found, they're already looking for the next batch of posts to steal. I've put a tag on them, so even if I do end up reading one of their posts, I avoid voting and commenting. At worst, I'm talking to a robot, or at best, I'm just yelling into the void.

[-] THB@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago

They just posted an AI slop image of cats in a PC tower masquerading as a personal post of something that really happened. That was enough to convince me to block.

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah. Leaving other people's posts in first person definitely makes it feel much dirtier.

Yeah, tbh the whole point of Lemmy, which is a thread centered platform AKA: a lotta of conversations, totally go fuck itself with bots...

[-] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

It also is the only source of content for c/shittymoviedetails but those tend to be hit or miss with a bit more misses.

[-] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

At first I read this and was like, "Wait, who?" I went back to the main page and tried seeing any posts by that name. I tried every sort-type and didn't see it. So I looked up the name directly.

Found the profile. In the corner, I saw the button: "Unblock user."

Ha! No wonder I didn't recognize the name. - turns out I already blocked them some time ago! I rarely block anybody, their posts must have overwhelmingly been utter garbage to make it onto that short list.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm still not sure who we're talking about....

[-] sanitation@lemmy.today 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I think people that say lemmy is full of content and by posting content im "suffocating an active community" are kind of losing their story if username of an active user is that recognizable. I think lemmy is starved for content and it shows, thare are just no or very little contributors.

It is truly confusing why would lemmy attempt to stop an active contributor given total lack of content.

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago

It’s the low effort you put into it. Quantity is not necessarily quality.

I agree with you. I think it's a bot and thus should be banned, as per the rules.

Just block and move on is okay for trolls and sock puppets. I don't think that's a good strategy for bots. You don't see them any more but they keep posting using bandwidth. They're building up a profile with engagement that will make it harder to get banned down the line when they start using the account for something worse.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 4 points 2 weeks ago

I agree, also, they inevitably suffocate genuine stuff

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I don't see a rule against bots, the spam rule seems to be about crossposting.

Edit: nvm, I can't read. It is against the rules. Im not certain sanitation is a bot, he probably just has a reposting tool but I think he is curating what he chooses to repost.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I would qualify that as bot activities

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

will make it harder to get banned down the line when they start using the account for something worse

You get banned per community, afaik you can't be banned from the total Fediverse by anyone. I dont think an account with more engagement is less likely to get banned for posting bad stuff.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

You can be banned from a instance

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

You're right of course, but you can continue posting elsewhere. Unless your home instance bans you i guess.

[-] amio@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

If it did, the knee jerk reaction would be to find some other instance

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 weeks ago

For me it’s the apparent vote manipulation that is really pissing me off. At 40-50 posts a day it seems like they are a bot but they could also just have no life whatsoever or a really really boring job (or both).

But I keep seeing them hit the front page over and over with posts that have 40-50 upvotes in an hour and 0 comments. I just don’t see how that’s possible unless they are bot votes.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 2 weeks ago

Usually my posts take at least 2 hours to get more than 30 upvotes so i guess, but also it seems that this community has a lil more users reacting

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

Sure but this post also has 9 separate comment threads in 4 hours in addition to 70+ upvotes from what I can see. I’m not saying that every post is going to look the same but typically a highly upvoted post will have several comments. Given the typical ratio of comments to votes it seems like a weird pattern to me.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

You are right, i wonder what's goin on tbh, though i don't make many post to have a huge opinion on this and many of my post don't have that many comments anyway so idk

[-] sanitation@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

vote manipulation

could you clarify to me - what do you mean by vote manipulation? what potential interest or gain could anyone possibly have from lemmy votes?

Yeah that's what the block button is for. Blocking is a great method for content curation.

Reddit had a ton of accounts like this, and I loved blocking every one of them. That clearly wasn't the majority opinion, though.

I think that mods should only take action if it's too difficult to moderate or the posts are doing consistently poorly. Not a mod, though, so what do I know?

[-] amio@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Unfortunately the fact that you need 400 billion fucking things blocked to make this place less annoying... means that it is annoying. Bot accounts and communities that already exist fifty thousand other fucking places with no activity are way too trivial to spin up

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I've blocked maybe a dozen accounts that probably aren't even active anymore.

Is everybody else just raw dogging ALL instead of making a subscription list?

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

If my home feed runs out of new and interesting stuff i open all, think a lot of people do that. Have to say I'm not desperate enough to sort all by new or hot.

[-] amio@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

To a degree, yes, how do you build that list otherwise? Most "communities" are duds with no activity. And poor support for aggregating even identically named communities across instances means all of this is a real chore. And how do you even find the relevant ones anyway? I keep whining about discoverability on here but that's just because it sucks

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I definitely agree with you there. Finding the communities is not easy.

I think when I first started I went through a 411 list and just started adding things that sounds interesting. Many of them still haven't had any content since I joined, but if they ever do, I'll catch it.

I also follow /new communities, and every now and then I'll join a fresh one if it sounds fun. Again, they may not go anywhere, but I'll know if they do.

Otherwise, I search for things when they randomly pop in my head, or if someone else on here mentions one in particular. Or if I'm bored, I'll switch to all and see if anything catches my eye.

Welp, as i said in the post, i can do it, but their excessive posting is suffocating genuine content which gets way less comments to discuss with

sounds like a cm0002 copycat.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I wish I could use regex for blocks as doing cm0002@* would be nice.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

I feel like that would need to be .* but im kinda wondering if you need to do something for the at but I can't for the life of me think if at is used for anything. you could do the keyword block thing but im worried about using that to much. I have not seen an alt of his in awhile so im guessing I have them all blocked at this point but man has to be more than a dozen. When I go through my block list I have to scroll for a bit to get passed his.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 3 points 2 weeks ago
[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

cm0002 was awhile back from my perspective but I have blocked many many of his alts. It was a guy with a thing in his craw for "tankies" and he felt the best way to express it was to make posts in .world that were copies of ones from .ml in order to suppress .ml I guess. I would not have realized but I was posting devils panties to a .ml comics thing and he was doing it and it kinda was annoying me as in my own feed I would see his over mine because I read by most recent. Basically within an hour he would repost. I thought he was a bot but talked with him. Here is the think I was like. Well if you will post devils panties every day I can just stop and just see it in your posts. he was like no. so basically he would only do it for his repost mission but would not make a point of doing it himself to add content to the fediverse. it was kinda funny because I started posting in various other ways and got it to the point where I would post just text saying hey todays devils panties was real fun because or whatnot. He would post with the url and everything even though that was not in my post. so he would do all the work if I posted. If I did not post anything though then he would not post. At that point it was. Wow. This guy just has mental problems.

[-] waz@feddit.uk 3 points 2 weeks ago

Ha. And still more pop up, it’s like a weird game of whack a mole

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Ahh, I knew I recognized the name, but I forgot why.

I remember seeing all those double posts back in the day and being annoyed for you! I always enjoyed reading those strips. Thank you!

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Linking to Reddit is against community rules.

Idk, I think it isn't actually automated and he is picking the content he reposts. I don't really see a harm to it when Lemmy is sometimes starving for content.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 8 points 2 weeks ago

He makes 1,078 posts per month (according to the "activity" stat) which means it's roughly 30 posts per day, there is no way a human makes 30 posts per day without automations of some sort

If you look at his comments they are is kinda unhinged

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Other than the most recent one where he's responding to someone in all caps, I don't see it. The all caps response comes off as someone tired of all the complaining, not necessarily unhinged.

Social media as a whole has been abysmal about allowing content to be cited, linked, or tracked back to original sources. I consider it a fundamental flaw to solve. Imgur was one attempt but big tech was way too greedy and every site wanted to host (read: own) anything that gets posted. This could be one of the genuinely useful problems for AI to help tackle.

[-] cattywampas@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago
[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 weeks ago

I guess that's why it's mildly infuriating instead of extremely infuriating, it's a small matter that can be solved easily.

[-] vogi@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yea, but it still makes genuine posters have less comments though (and so discussion)

Hey! Look at that, we almost recreated the original post in its entirety inside of the comments!!!

Sorry, I'm overly pedantic and snarky and actually annoying. Just noticed it wanted to point that out. All in good fun. I see myself out now. :)
