So its hard to make a bad documentary but easy to fuck up horror.
Plus, horror is one of the more popular ones to make with a tiny budget. Lots of the famous slashers like Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc. are fun to watch (especially with a group), but absolutely deserve their low/mid ratings, lol
Horror also has the sequel problem where the first movie is solid but the shitty sequels drag the ratings down.

Well... Friday the 13th and Halloween were kind of groundbreaking and genre defining. In my opinion they deserve high ratings.
I love em too, but I binge-watched many of them with some friends a couple of years ago, and most are true B-movies. I understand why some people don't appreciate them.

I was the only person in the theatre laughing during the first Nightmare movie, it was so dumb.

I don't like Arianna Grande, so when her merits are discussed I don't join the discussion, because my opinion on something that I don't care about doesn't matter.
I think it’s more that horror has long been the realm of b-movies but nobody sets out to make a b-grade documentary.
Additionally b-movies are rife with camp and camp is as divisive as puns. Basically nobody just tolerates camp, you either like 60s Batman, for example, or you think it’s dumb.

All the President's Men, Spotlight, Shattered Glass, Capote would be examples I'd use. They're going to be movies that largely take place in news rooms or follow journalism

My mind jumps to Erin Brockovich and the like. Movies that were big news stories and all about the people doing the investigation that became the news.
I think those would fall into Drama, Crime, Thriller, Documentary, etc. There are less than 700 titles for "News" so very few, I have no idea what it means but maybe literal news clips.
The note says films with multiple genres are lumped under multiple categories so it could be under both.

It does indeed seem to be that mostly, documentaries that focus on big news stories and dramatized.
The graphic appears to be quite old though as no matter what filtering I did I couldn't get close to their number.
At the top of the chart, the ratings spread out. To me, this shows broad appeal. And, I think we've all learned that the more people who vote, the closer to a bell curve the ratings look, with the middle getting the most votes. Which is why so many popular movies have middling ratings.
The higher ratings near the bottom show niche appeal, few people voting, but a more loyal audience.

That's a good observation. I see that in steam ratings all the time: Games that are so massively popular that they bring in people who don't usually play the genre will have lower ratings than niche games that only reach their niche.

Horror just gets no respect as a genre. A score of 6 and 7 is actually pretty good. So rare for a horror movie to crack 8.0.
They get no respect at the Oscar level. IMDB users clearly have a ton of respect for them.

There's a pretty wide flavor profile to horror, from the thriller/gross-out/sexplotation end of the spectrum to the dramady/mockumentary/parody end. And some movies are really a product of their era. Movies like Scream and A Cabin in the Woods are fine on their own. But they're written like love letters to horror movie fans from the generation prior. Meanwhile, movies like Friday the 13th and Hellraiser and Alien start out as these very heavy social commentaries on class and gender, packed into a lasagna-like dish of special effects gore. But then their sequels just get strung out into action-movie slop.
A horror movie 6 can be a lot of different things to a lot of people. Is it an uncut gem or a fading star? Did they get too cheesy or too gory or too cliche? Or is this just a movie for someone with rarified tastes?
Horror is a fine genre, and it’s terrific to see well-made films of that kind. But wow, there is a LOT of bad horror out there.

The website Bloody Disgusting is better for horror fans IMO. Also I think whoever made this shouldn't have included genres with so few data points.
That said, the Animation spread is interesting, leans towards higher rating but also a long tail into lower scores.
I'm amused that they're mostly normal distributions until you get to the chaotic distributions of reality and talk shows... then there's the cat-shaped distribution of gameshows.
Apparently there are only 3 game show movies which is why it looks so funky.
Talk shows and reality shows also have only double digit counts, which is why they are so lumpy.
It seems to be a function of sample size. Like someone else said, I don't know why a category with 3 movies was included.

I question that when I read the game show category has n of 3, yet displays 3 curves, not 3 data points. Something ain't right, might be me.
This chart confuses me. First off the lines for each movie are weirdly high. Second, the color gradient is clearly to make this look pretty instead of readable. Third reality TV and talk show having low movie counts makes sense but 3 movies that are "game show" movies? Just off the top of my head Slumdog Millionaire, The Luckiest Man in America, The Running Man, Death Race, and Gamer are all game show movies. So I'm not sure how they're sorting this. I also probably wouldn't include any genres that don't have enough movies to make sure you have a good sample

Whatever three are in Game Shows would probably fit right into Drama.

Quick check in imdb does show none of the named ones have the "Game Show" genre listed. But under game show imdb has 16 things I've never heard of. I dunno. The days the graph is based off of seems weird
