Fuck surveillance. Fuck telemetry. All my homeboies use GrapheneOS, pihole, unbound and homelab vpns.
I fear the approaching day I'll be forced to ditch the dumbphone and switch to a "smart"phone.
There are alternatives fortunately. Like /e/os from Murena (I have it on my fairphone 6 and absolutely love it, no problems with both governmental and banking apps, comes without google but you can activate some google functionality with microG). There is also SailfishOS from Jolla and its Jolla phone and of course there is GrapheneOS. All of those alternatives are privacy oriented. Cheers!
SailfishOS is proprietary. I would never trust a proprietary OS with my privacy.

Fully functional, I run it currently on a Fairphone 4. Every phone feature works, AFAIK. Native app selection could be better, but android apps work via waydroid. Probably not banking apps, though... Haven't even tried. :D

I think that on fairphone 5 it works, but not on fp6. As far as I can remember, I checked quite some time ago. Out of curiosity, what do you need the ram for?

Run a server at home with a big GPU, set up a VPN to get remote access, get access to high quality self-hosted models regardless of how much RAM your phone has
Also I need lots of storage (at minimum 256GB) because my phone is an offline backup of my photos, music, English Wikipedia, movies, etc
Phones are like the worst place to back everything up. When shit goes tits up, you have to read data straight off the chip rather than a removable drive.
The Fairphone, however, has a MicroSDXC slot, so even if you get a 5 with less storage than the 6, you can just buy a microsd card, it supports up to 2TB I believe. As a bonus if your phone dies, you'll still have access to your data unless it somehow manages to take the microsd card with it.
i do have a microSD card, it's broken and I've needed to retransfer over the data 4 times, whilst my internal storage has never failed (on my current Motorola g73 phone)
My phone isn't my only backup, but I can't carry my server and laptop with me everywhere, and multiple times it's been useful to have a local backup of various kinds of data
I do still store some data on my microSD card, but it is really annoying having to transfer it back again every time it breaks and it means I can't store anything I always need to have on it

AOSP is fully open source. Google certified Android isn't.
Sailfish is proprietary Linux. Gapps Android is proprietary AOSP. GrapheneOS is fully open-source and AOSP-based.
I stand by my point. Never use a proprietary OS of you care about your privacy. I don't like proprietary Linux distros.

Fairphobe is neat but I'd never use it. Underpowered device, weak hardware security. It seems it can run many OSes, idk which it comes with.
I only recommend GrapheneOS as a mobile OS because it takes phone security seriously. With the rise of surveillance capitalism and fascism, people need devices with strong security guarantees.
I don't recommend Linux phones because often lack of basically any security. Desktop OSes have very different threat models compared to mobile OSes. Desktop linux (which Linux phones basically still are) lack strong software security because nothing is properly isolated and it is trivial for malware to exploit 0days or run persistent under your user (I can link to my comment on the insecurity of desktop Linux, which applies to most desktop OSes). Android has protected against most of the recent Local Privilege Escalation attacks present in the Linux kernel (eg copyfail) because of its security design. Pre-emptive security practices are important.

For the foreseeable future it'll unfortunately only be fully functional in countries where you don't use a mobile auth and signing service. Which, okay, I can skip in my country and use an ID card instead, but then I have to have a card reader on me whenever I need to sign into any government services or bank

Just dropped my old phone the other day, went and got a new ish pixel from my local online classifieds, and now I'm on graphene OS. Bro! It's a wonderful feeling. Even if I do have to do all my mobile banking through a browser now
That's kind of what I'm leaning towards. Pixels are cheap second-hand and having owned one previously I liked the hardware. I just wish I had known about graphene back then. I think graphene is starting to support a few other devices now though?
There was the announcement of Motorola making something with GrapheneOS, but we know nothing about it and I fear any device they make will be as featureless as a Pixel. Other than that, no, still only Pixels.
i have the same phone and os with murena. im pretty happy with it overall, but im having a ton of issues with dating apps and idk what to do. i just want to make a feeld account but they ban me before i can even put in any info ๐ im guessing its some recaptcha bullshit but they wont even tell me why my account was banned and they only have an ai chatbot when you try to contact anyone. im giving up but im feeling really pushed out of like the main way people date these days for daring to value my privacy just a little bit.
