Which accent? We've got so many.

[-] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

The American brain can't comprehend there being multiple noticeable cultural divisions within a country.

[-] hernanca@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Scouse should qualify as a separate language at this point.

Should also add 🇦🇺 English (Poisonous)

[-] Impound4017@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago

I believe that’d be English (Venomous), unless there’s something I don’t know about the edibility of Aussies.

[-] essell@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

I ain't gonna risk licking them

This or one of the 56 flavours of English (Colonial) but perhaps American also counts as that

Honestly, as an outsider i can say it sounds kinda cute and very polite

It's the antithesis of whatever the southern US is speaking. That just sounds like a whole pack of chewing gum is in your mouth.

[-] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Honestly sort of similar accents.

[-] iamericandre@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

There are accents in the outer banks area of North Carolina that are the closest to the original British and Irish settlers of the area.

[-] wraekscadu@vargar.org 2 points 1 day ago

Hey come on now, the southern accent is endearing. What's even more interesting is that the accent is consistent across languages. Check out the French settlers from the former Louisiana territory. French is their first language, and yet they sound like a stereotypical American trying to pronounce French words. It's so beautiful!

[-] zikzak025@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

There's something in the water then, got it.

[-] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

Some might have a strong accent, at least it's not as bad as how much Americans rapes the English language. I mean, they can't even say aluminium properly.

[-] zikzak025@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Aluminum came first, for what it's worth. British publications just added the extra i because they thought it sounded fancier.

[-] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Not true. It came from the latin word alumina, or French alun, yet the British spelling maintains the "ium" suffix as with many other elements in the periodic table. The British spelling, which is the same in many other countries and widely accepted as the correct spelling, predates the American spelling. The Americans made a simplified version.

the British spelling maintains the "ium" suffix as with many other elements in the periodic table.

Lanthanum, molybdenum, platinum. It could be said aluminum follows the "-num" suffix used by other elements on the periodic table.

The British spelling, which is the same in many other countries and widely accepted as the correct spelling, predates the American spelling.

The British spelling was originally alumium, as written by Sir Humphry Davy. But this didn't comply with the naming standard of alumina as its oxide. To include the n, he started writing it as aluminum, before the third spelling aluminium entered popular use in academic circles.

I'm just going to sprinkle the letter z all over the place, which they will be unable to pronounce, which will erroneously replace the letter s.

Serialization, ewwww, just look at it.

[-] deHaga@feddit.uk 35 points 2 days ago

Do Americans take vocal fry lessons?

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 29 points 2 days ago

why do you think they consume so much oil?

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

That’s what cigarettes are for.

You ever hear a posh British man from the early-mid 1900's talk? The US valley-girl vocal fry has nothing on CS Lewis.

Finnish is probably the most deep-fried language, though.

british accent? disgusting

scottish accent? cute af

but i'm biased

[-] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

at the risk of flaming a lot of people:

isn't a scottish accent also british (as in, spoken on great britain)?

[-] smeg@feddit.uk 7 points 2 days ago

Absolutely, a singular "British accent" is something that only Americans seem to think exists, and they usually mean RP (the posh accent found mostly in the south east of England).

Scotland, England, Wales, all part of Britain, and all have plenty of wildly different accents within them. Compare Geordie, West Country, Cockney, Scouse, and Brummie. Even the accents between Scotland's two main cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh, are completely different.

So yeah, if someone says they love a "British accent" just respond in Glaswegian and see how they like it!

"The British class system is not about money. It is a caste system. You can have all the money in the world, but if you don't have the accent, the school, and the pedigree, you remain an Untouchable to the ruling class." Antony Jay & Jonathan Lynn: Yes Minister

[-] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

A couple I know moved from Canada to the UK. Even at 6ish years old, despite being raised by them, including one as a stay-at-home mom, the kid had a strong British accent.

Luckily, they're mostly immune, although my friend does now say "gareridge" instead of "gahraje".

  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
