The majority of these distilleries are in red states. They voted for Trump and this is what they get.

[-] zabadoh@ani.social 67 points 1 month ago

Tariffs aren't just Trump's obsession, they're a core part of Project 2025's economic plan, so any R president/congress is going to keep throwing up tariffs.

Of course, tariffs aren't actually helping American workers, because they're effectively a hidden sales tax, while the R's block labor reforms, such as increasing mimumum wage, destroying unions, etc. as they have done for decades.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 month ago

Agreed. I'm in one and it's hurting distilleries here. Absolutely fuck them!

I still buy Canadian goods. Don't care, worth it. Besides I'm less likely to get food poisoning. Win WIn

[-] BreakerSwitch@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

I should start a store here stateside that only sells Canadian goods. Food mostly, for safety

[-] myyass@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I would totally shop there. At least I know I won't die.

[-] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 month ago

Well maybe instead of complaining about Canadians not buying, they should be doing something to get rid of the menace in their whitehouse. But of course it's much easier to just blame Canada.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

If conservatives/regressives weren't blaming other people for their problems, they wouldn't be conservatives anymore.

Lol good I hope the American economy crumbles we deserve it

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Have you seen the price of things? It's definitely showing cracks

[-] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Those MAGA dumbshits voted for it, zero sympathy. Carry on Canada, the new North American beacon.

[-] Einskjaldi@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Quite, the first 2016 term had some similar things so dropping liquor sales isn't a unexpected event.

[-] eareetator@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Well, they could give everyone deep discounts to increase sales and so everyone can drink enough to blackout til the end of this nightmare.

[-] clanker_victim_555@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago

You're not going to buy back Canadian customers.

[-] DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

At least salvage what they can from the nightmare trying to bring back measles.

[-] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

omg that's Canadian?! fuck yes.

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

At least that's what the import company claims! If a real Canadian can correct me, please feel free

[-] JC1@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

No need to correcr you as it is! 😊 https://www.crownroyal.com/story/our-home

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Crown Royal is brewed, distilled, and barrel aged in Gimli Manitoba.

Recently the company moved bottling for the US market to the US, but bottling for the Canadian market remains in Canada.

Was the Canadian market that important for American liquor that our boycott busted them? Or were there other countries that also boycotted their alcohol?

[-] villasv@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Was the Canadian market that important for American liquor that our boycott busted them?

Yeah, it has been pretty damaging, but great for our local industry

How do you like your deal maker that you liked because he’s so brash and strong and tells it like it is, now? We were sure you were idiots back then - now you know, too.

Trade agreements mean shit because even with lower prices, I'll never buy anything made in the USA.

[-] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

This on top of younger generations not drinking nearly as much.

[-] nullspace@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

When a few beers cost as much as a 12 pack and a DUI can completely derail your life, I don't blame them.

[-] pedz@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

Well, I mean... a DUI should derail one's life, otherwise it could ruins someone else's life.

Canada makes some of the best whiskeys (and ryes) in the world, we'll have plenty to drink for sure!

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

I was legit shocked when I saw Canadian Club available for purchase in Sydney Australia.

CC's good stuff! My personal favourite from them is their 100% Rye

TLDR;

For a few days, Chris Swonger saw some light at the end of the tunnel.

The head of the association representing U.S. distillers was optimistic a trade deal with Canada was at hand in mid-August, and that American liquor, wine and beer would soon be back on the shelves at the LCBO and other provincial monopolies.

…was this the whole article?

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 3 points 1 month ago

That article doesn't load, neither with nor without an ad-blocker.

I’m surprised that two Canadian provinces are supporting US tariffs. I don’t know much about Alberta and Saskatchewan but I’m surprised they are siding against Canada.

[-] GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 month ago

Alberta is run by Charles Koch via a lobbyist stooge, and a media ecosystem bought and paid for by Blackrock. Nearly half of "Albertans" have been in Alberta less than 20 years, about 25% of those are people came from Texas or the US Midwest, and the rest were people who washed out of polite society in other provinces and were willing to dig holes for big oil for a meal and some meth money.

Alberta has an immigration problem, but it isn't black or brown people that are the problem so it doesn't get phrased that way.

[-] orbitz@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Lived there for years, some of most backwards small town people you'd see and often in the cities. They have their US styled ideals but have no idea how much they'd lose if they separated. Course maybe some do, shouldn't paint a broad brush but in general from living in the ass end of nowhere, most people were nice but I didn't agree with their views. Which I think is a common thread, locally they're nice they just vote to restrict anyone not like them, which isn't nice.

Mean where I lived there were tons of immigrants (compared to town size anyways, lots of newfies too, couldn't throw a rock without hitting one, never could understand the accent when they drank but since I was drunk too didn't matter, in the end everyone was usually cool) actually people from all over. They were all nice and personable, and many set up shops and they did well. Why don't we want more of people like that in general?

[-] GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

I was born here, raised here, spent most of my life here, raised my kids here. I watched our population nearly double since I graduated high school. We'd look a lot more like BC if our urban population were a bit bigger and our rural population were a bit smaller. We missed having an NDP premier by 3 ridings and 100 votes last provincial election.

Unfortunately we developed a reputation for being a place where anti-social conservatives can thrive and we've been in decline ever since.

IDK about Sask. But Berta's premier is a traitor working for Dumpie.

[-] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Can't speak for Saskatchewan but Alberta's leadership is trying their hardest to turn it into North Texas.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I don't know much about Canadian provinces, but I'd be willing to bet there's a lot of cousin fuckers 'round those parts.

[-] JC1@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

They are the fossil fuel provinces. Alberta is by far the most entitled of every provinces. They were living by Canada's teet for a long time and then found a way to process the oil sands. By this point, they became rich. They at first tried to manage this new riches properly, establishing a provincial fund, a generation fund that the Norwegians basically copied. But then they started to elect conservative governments. Those governments reduced taxes as much as they could, slashed social programs, spent every dime they could and now they complain about the rest of Canada (especially Quebec) because they're not as rich as them. Today, their generational fund is mostly non existent while the Norwegian one is the biggest investment fund on earth.

They are the perfect example of entitled there is. They always complain that they don't want to pay the federal government for other provinces while a few years ago (decade, was in 2008 I think) oil became so cheap for a brief moment and Alberta really struggled as their oil extraction is expensive and they basically burned through their money. All they did is complain for the federal government to help them. And they went right back to their usual behavior when oil went back up. Complete assholes.

Alberta is completely captured by the oil and gas industry. Its population is docile and captured. Whatever any government does, they always vote conservative, no matter what. Saskatchewan is less bad as it's quieter, but their voting pattern is mostly the same. So for any federal government, why answer to Alberta's pleading as what ever they do, it will never change the outcome of the vote? It's good anyway as their pleadings are unreasonable. They prefer electing traitors that meet and side with Trump behind the federal government's back during a trade war, against the rest of Canada.

Look! The Republicans in absolute tyrannical power are making America great again!
