If you don't like, don't buy.
"no choice"
If only lies had consequences.
There were choices. They could do a play/install disc combo. If Sony didn't allow that for some reason, they could easily split the game in two and put the two SKUs in the same case.
They just didn't want to. It wasn't a scenario where there were no options.
If only lies had consequences.
They do. It's called "voting with your wallet". Don't like this decision? Don't buy the game.
as if that wouldn't be misconstrued as "people don't want physical media. Just look at the poor sales"
Growing up means understanding that the only thing you can control is your own actions. What other people do isn't your concern unless you're going to go make it their concrn.
“First and foremost, personally, I'm very happy that we are able to release a physical disc version of FFVII Revelation considering how the entire gaming market, or the landscape, is veering towards the disc-less direction,”
Except... this might as well not be a physical disc version. It's like, the worst of both worlds.
It might let you download less than would be the case if it were purely digital.
There are people out there who don't have the most amazing Internet connections.
Fair point, that is an upside. But it still feels like it has all the other downsides of both formats. They can take it away whenever they want because the full game isn't on disc, and it required all the plastic and shipping to move a physical product without all of the product actually on disc anyway.
I remember having to download games bit by bit (heh) over 2 weeks
It's hard to imagine what in this game needs to take up 210GB…
Rebirth is almost 150GB. In Revelation, they're cutting the Mythril Mines and some places like the Gongaga reactor that you wouldn't return to at this point of the game, and they're adding the Northern Crater, Wutai, Mideel, Rocket Town (remade as a space center), Fort Condor, and Midgar is back, each of this as a full region, not just one city. They're not adding full underwater exploration, but there are underwater events.
I don't know how this game can be under 250GB.
4k uncompressed texture, Tifa's gigantic fist attack.
Weapons big.
I had totally missed the news that the last part of FFVII remake wouldn't get a functional physical edition. So disappointing! Especially in the last year of discs. Don't see why it can't be on 3 discs, or have been made with 2 discs in mind.
Not doing physical is a way bigger compromise to me than anything else they could have landed on.
Left the headline mostly in tact to avoid over-editorializing, but I think the idea that there was no other choice is absurd.
Space available on a bluray disk: 50GB max for a dual layer disk.
Game's total size: 210GB.
The only other choice was to do what they used to do back in the day: Put it on 5 disks.
I would guess that most of that is textures.
They could probably reasonably just ship half-resolution textures on disc and make higher-res textures be a downloadable option. Bethesda did that with their games, later on added free, downloadable higher-res textures. Shouldn't require a lot of technical work. Maybe reducing texture resolution could trip some existing bug, a race condition somewhere, but it should be pretty mechanical, as changes go.
I don't really have a dog in this race---I wouldn't get the game either way. So I'm not pushing for that as an option. Just saying that I think that it's an option from a technical standpoint, if one wanted to provide a compact, on-disc version of the game.
A normal part of game optimization is making sure that it doesn’t take up all the storage space on every device.
What exam is in that game that justifies those file sizes?
Wonder if these 210gb are worth 210h of normal playtime. If the game is 20h long, all these textures and gigs are worthless.
So there indeed was a perfectly good other choice.
PS5 discs can store up to 100 GB.
3 then.
No Choice
No buy
Simple as😤
Yeah but people will still buy consoles. So not simple. They can't control the hardware and then whine about discs. Meh.
It might be the last game I’ll buy on my Playstation 5 as I’m clearly transitionning to GOG/Steam instead.
I can understand why they would not have many discs the way we used to, but these kind of practices makes me wonder about what’s gonna happen if we want to play the game in 30 years.
Go outside and do something hopefully. There are probably enough games to last a persons lifetime already.
Yeah lets burn that book as there are many others and we can still go outside instead of reading.
Maybe it’s not for you, but for me game preservation is important and when I see how large games are now, it makes me wonder how people will be able to store them for future generations. And then there are DRM’s..
what’s gonna happen if we want to play the game in 30 years.
You'll have to buy the remaster for $149.99.
I think it’ll be closer to $300.
You mean for 30usd/mo, but only on even numbered months
