A unpopular opinion I often hear is "I actually like [insert usually dislike stuff]" and vice versa. I think this kind of take is way more common than most people believe for the sole fact that people in general have various taste.

Being a rent seeking parasite is good actually.

I don't agree, but I notice a lot of people actually do fantazise being an aristocrat. The goal is to retire and be served by others now. The fact that slavery and brutal autocracies force millions to labor for the first world is seen as abstract but the primary issue most people have in the first world is that we don't get enough of the share of loot from these brutal systems. Its the same reason "white privilege" is seen as so ridiculous to some. People are working hard, and life is tough, so the idea that they got more they deserved too is an affront to the narrative we hold for ourselves.

Does racism count? So many racists, and racism is basically the hottest take ever ("you are inferior because of your skin color").

Any far right opinions, looking at the last 10 years of election results.

Circumcision is male genital mutilation*.

Reasonably popular opinion almost everywhere except for two specific countries...

* to be clear: but not to the same level as FGM, which is a whole level of hell worse

[-] Naive@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Well, it is rare opinion (I never met anyone in my country except myself who have had this opinion, now am kinda skeptical though) where I live and I am not in those two countries.

"You should go to reddit" is an unpopular opinion around here.

[-] Tja@programming.dev 5 points 2 days ago

Despite many doing it (including me until old.reddit.com stopped working).

[-] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yes, but the context is "you should go to reddit to see how stupid those people are", which is reddit's version of an unpopular opinion.

I haven´t been back to reddit since my last ban when I started this account.

[-] impairedimperator@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I think "go back to reddit" is Lemmy for "go fuck yourself"

[-] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Oh, that's not how I meant. Reddit is an amazing storehouse of both human knowledge and human stupidity.

9/11 was an insider's job or it was not done by Muslims is the most popular hot take where I live.

and hatred against dark skinned people. Idk about West but where I live, dark skin is mocked a lot.

[-] AskewLord@piefed.social 0 points 1 day ago

I live in one of the most progressive places in the USA, and the most racist people are often the progressives. They absolutely hate non-white people in real life, they only think they should have rights and freedoms in the abstract.

[-] RBWells@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

I live in Florida and the northerners who come down are so much more racist than the native born, at least in my personal experience. My ex came from Michigan and went to an all white school up there, never met or hung out with anyone not white. They may not have explicit segregation but do have effective segregation.

So he comes down here where we were forcibly desegregated so I have friends of all sorts and my kids do & also it's just more a block by block version of "segregation" less a side of town so we are just most often in mixed situations and holy shit he was not prepared for that. So racist he held every stereotype you can imagine.

So anyway - I kind of agree, up north it seems they are theoretically not racist but are segregated, down here more explicit trouble because we are together, but it's getting better. Or was at least through the generation following mine, maybe not anymore, not sure.

I've heard the comparison as a Southern racist will tolerate a black servant living on the same street as them while a Northern racist will tolerate a black doctor living in a different town.

[-] Naive@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

interesting! I thought it is only conservative Christians who hate non white people.

[-] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

No no. Many of those people absolutely love them if they are personally neighbors, coworkers, etc, but absolutely hate them in the abstract and would pay to have people like them, but not them, killed.

This will be controversial I think but I wanna say it.

I think "AI is the industrial revolution" is one of these opinions that makes AI easier to grasp and thus it's more popular than most people think.

I believe that too btw because it benefits and destroys us at the same scale. Of course when you get into the details it's a very different technology shift but I think generally a lot of people subscribe to that.

[-] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago

AI is the industrial revolution.

It's not though. AI will have definite impacts, but the wild overvaluation it currently has is based on fantasy.

[-] Quazatron@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

So are most religions, but here we are.

Millions of people are dead and lands are carved up because of some imaginary sky friends.

They're both speculative investments. The difference is one set of investors expects a return at some point, while the other is happy to receive payment after they die.

Outsourcing one's brain activity benefits whom exactly?

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 0 points 15 hours ago

Eh. There were entire sets of jobs dedicated to the manual calculation of numbers. Those jobs don't exist any more.

I'll say this, if you're using AI just to say; find something to buy or somewhere to eat at, or somewhat similar, that would be fine

The problem is generating fake art or to write for you is where the issues lie
