Recently rewatched, and aside from a couple gratuitous Spleen scenes, it absolutely holds up. Better with age, even, with all the Marvel stuff that's come out since then. Ahead of its time really.
Kind of surprised they didn't like it. Feels like one of those movies that they expected to like, so they saw all the flaws and none of the charm.
Also... This is the first time that the majority of their "rewrites" were just objectively awful.
The "hello, insane asylum?" joke is exactly the type of thing they (correctly) would have shit on if it were actually in the movie.

I watched this on laserdisc back in the day, it was a weird edit missing the quote above, which made the later scene make no sense whatsoever.
