Never gave up on rss myself. It just works.
I'm not the most technical person in the world so I don't remember how these things worked. What's the best way to organize rss?? I remember assing 'em to my igoogle homepage.

How is everyone finding new rss feeds?
That's is the thing: I typically don't find new feeds unless I specifically look for them (using web search, podcast websites etc). It leaves me the fuck alone, and I love that about RSS.
Figure out your interests, check web sites that are about the interests for rss feeds. You can also create rss feeds from lemmy and mastodon.
If I see a good article posted somewhere I'll then check out their other articles/posts. If I like what I'm seeing I add it to my RSS feed. That's all there is to it, and after a while you'll find yourself with a nice long blogroll.
I'm really hoping that Thunderbird includes feeds in the things it syncs across devices. If they did that and also integrated some kind of markdown personal wiki then it would explode in popularity, IMO.

I asked pretty early on in one of the fediverse coms if the Hot or All sorts are personalized at all. People told me it doesn't work like that here, that's what the developers were trying to get away from

This would be an argument only if you argued that everything is an algorithm at which point the argument would lose any meaning.
If that were the case, I could control https://programming.dev/feeds/u/kerneltale.xml?sort=New, but since I cannot control that feed, it is tailored to whatever programming.dev admins and the user that operates kerneltale publishes with it.

Well yes it's tailored but it is not an algorithm unless everything is an algorithm like a baking recipe.
A baking recipe is an algorithm, though. That was the example I learned in school to explain the concept of algorithms: a set of specific instructions to solve a problem in a finite number of steps. How else would you define it?
Pray tell, what do you think decides what goes into the RSS output and in what way? Could it be something that selects and sorts a list of entries based on some criteria? Something like a sorting algorithm?
Yes, everything is an algorithm. A baking recipe is an algorithm because it is a list of instructions that accomplish a specific goal. What came to be known as "The Algorithm" is one specific case that uses different variables (account history, the relevance of the content, and its popularity) to maximize engagement.

- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
