The captive lid is to keep the small thing attached to the big thing because the small thing is one of the big contributors to ocean plastic pollution
People are super sensitive about their lids or straws for some reason. Maybe i don't drink enough out of plastic bottles, but i have a hard time caring about these.
The attached lids make sense, we did the same with aluminum cans where the lids previously were ripped off.
Nobody gave a shit and it lowered pollution. Now people lose their shit over it
Straws are a simoñar story, just don't fucking use them at all, you don't need them
One or two comments are indeed raising eyebrows...
I'm not entirely buying the plastic pollution argument, even if it is the official stance, mostly because I see it more as a ploy to get us to chug two bottles of Evian doublehanded, than to just buy one.
Plus it's a sex symbol thing. You know what they say about a guy who never delids his bottle 😏

I remember being annoyed by these captive lids when they were introduced. Now it just feels wrong when lids aren't whenever I travel outside Europe.
Yeah I'm so used to not having to deal with the lid after opening it, so when a bottle isn't like this it's kinda like that feeling of not knowing what to do with your arms haha. What a first world problem to have.
I do prefer these captive lids though, it just seems to make sense to me, it's already going to go back on the bottle after you've taken your sip anyway.
Hated so much by Reform that they import bottled water from Turkey to avoid having “woke lids” at their conferences.
I feel like I was just constantly going "where did I put that lid?" "Have you seen my lid?"
Can't even tell you how many times I had to snort disapprovingly at someone asking "uhh can I borrow your lid for a sec."
A whole cultural phenomenon that just vanished overnight.
Gen Alpha will grow up not understanding most of our lid-based humour in those old sitcom episodes.
Plus the "can you hold this for me?" followed by "I can't, I have both hands occupied at the moment" excuse, as you shrug helplessly with a lid in one hand and a bottle in the other

But how do you open the bottle one handed, drop the lid, and then are forced to hold the open bottle while driving?

why didn't they just put a second, fake, bottle top next to the real one, sans lid.
So when you take the lid off, you screw it onto the other top. Move it back to close.
This post just made me realise I haven't been to the UK since these were introduced.
Recycling practice changes from country to country (and regions within countries) so much. You're not a true "citizen of the world" unless you know which places you remove the lid, the lid and the plastic ring, or leave both on.
I went to Wales recently and they didn't have them! My car still stinks of Dr Pepper from all the spills
Definitely caused way more problems than it solved.
Have found several carbonated drinks flat in our fridge as these caps are harder to put on straight.
Spoke to someone who’d leaked drink all over their backpack and liquid damaged their MacBook by a cap like this not screwing on properly.

I have the opposite problem - my hands are so arthritic I can't open the bloody things.
That sounds more like a you problem. Never had such a problem nor do I have ever seen anyone having it. Reading the responses I don't seem to be the only one.
It’s not really a me problem as I was describing other people having the issues not myself. Or not realising they’ve had an issue more accurately.
I have witnessed the cap try to go on slanted more frequently but I’ve noticed and re-done it, so not a huge deal for me personally.
The confusing thing to me is I thought differently coloured plastics were meant to be recycled separately, I used to take the caps off when putting things in the recycling.
Well, then those issues still appear to be limited to where you live, mysteriously enough. Misalignment of free caps is easier to achieve if anything. It is in both cases a matter of technique if you really insist on storing opened bottles horizontally, which always has the risks of spills. Blame physics.
Removing caps in recycling shouldn't be a big problem, probably make it even easier as the small caps can be collected more reliably. What is much harder to do is sorting sand and caps at the beach and get the caps out of the forest.
Well, 8 people upvoted what I wrote and 9 people downvoted, so that’s not nobody else agreeing. That’s some people agreeing and some not.
The obvious answer is simply that there are different cap designs for the new caps, and some are better than others with how close/tightly they hold the cap to the bottle.
As much we can agree on. There are better and worse cap designs, in both cases.
