"Private flights, used by an estimated 256,000 people (just 0.003% of the world’s population), are the most polluting form of transport, producing direct carbon emissions 10 to 14 times greater per passenger than commercial aviation travel, the report said."

I expect this 10 to 14 times greater to be calculated using the nominal passenger capacities. Since private jets are bound to fly more often at low capacity (to pick up a dress for example), the real difference is going to be much higher.

Just ban private jets.

There are so many things we could just stop doing, but they make rich assholes unhappy. That's true for like all of humanity, but the scale is global now instead of just "the peasants are eating dirt"

Though now I'm thinking of a story where someone infiltrates their way into being the pilot for a rich asshole, and then jumps out and lets the billionaire blow up in the crash. Noting that down for my near-future dystopia tabletop rpg.

That does sound like a World of Darkness glasswalker mission.

But in regard to banning private jet travel... That would be the rational solution. But our society is irrational specifically because it's structured and led by the small group of people flying in those private jets.

It’s not just that it would make the rich assholes unhappy, there’s a whole percentage of the population that will never be able to afford a jet but thinks ‘but one day I might have a private jet, and I don’t want to have that chance taken away from me’…

Not only that, but you can get reimbursed for using your private plane for business travel. Ridiculous.

Yes but the reason the earth system is collapsing and Climate Change is cooking the planet is because YOU sometimes don't recycle and you leave your electronics on by accident a lot!!

Thanks a lot you selfish jerk!

Don’t forget having the audacity to set your AC as low as 75°F/24°C.

They should make it so that private aircraft get the same mileage allowance as private cars, 76 cents per mile this year.

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
