I never understood why anyone would host on DO, they were always much more expensive then the competitors.

Seriously, most people probably could get by with a free VPS or free shell account.

Never heard of CSS tricks; I tried to investigate in the posted article, but too much emojis.

Just put "free vps" or "free shell account" into a good search engine. For example: https://freeshell.de/services/

Or this is almost free (0.1 $ / month): https://tierhive.com/

Huh that really is cheap, thing stopping me from self hosting is public IPs being expensive so that could be a cheap loophole.

Doubt you could host much on that

It is still enough for babbys first website/newsletter/blog etc. 128 MB is plenty for any personal website; you could probably even run a shop on that.

Our company's website requires 5 MB storage and no database.

The amount of hail mary's CSS-Tricks was able to get me through is innumerable.

Vote with your wallet. Yesterday I dumped all my Digital Ocean stuff, closed my account and let them know why.

I moved my work’s dev environment after 12 years of giving DO money. Not much but add my middle finger to the pile.

[-] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago

What did you move to? I'm in the same boat.

Trying out OVHcloud but can’t vouch for it until it’s set up. Good unmanaged option out of Quebec which is near-ish to me.

Canadian servers owned and operated by a French company outside of the CLOUD Act’s reach. Important to me on principle.

Depends where you are. Look up local (organic) data centres near you.

[-] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 day ago

Literally why though? I just don't get this.

[-] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago

Because the guy that owns DigitalOcean is a cunt.

who is also friends with DHH which is what the majority of these "donors" are. they're just his friends who just so happen to own these dumb tech companies.

Rails was explosive 15 to 20 years ago (I hated it and I think it made me a dumber programmer) so it kind of makes since that these two industry movers became close that"grew up" around the same time.

Supporting racist posts by the main guy.

Ah yea, I remember what it was like to see all those "we stand with Ukraine banners," and the weird ones about antisemitism, but almost never the anti-apartheid and anti-genocide ones against actual Nazis. Yet here is another Ed Sheeran supposedly fighting the Nazis by being silent against the Nazis. Wonder what else you'll find about him.
