Here is what happened in the company’s early years — and why the founder debate is more complicated than it seems.
It's not "complicated". Elon Musk is not, and never has been, a "founder" of Tesla. Period. End of statement.

Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning started Tesla, but Tesla itself has described Musk as a co-founder and has also described the company as having a team of founders. Tesla’s own historical materials list Musk, Eberhard, Tarpenning, JB Straubel and Ian Wright among those who founded the company. So the distinction between ‘started the company’ and ‘co-founder’ matters here.

I’m simply pointing out that Tesla’s own historical account has described him as a co-founder, alongside Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning, JB Straubel and Ian Wright. The history doesn't "become more nuanced" just because someone reinvents it. Either he was a "founding member" of the company...meaning, by definition, that he was there from the beginning...or, he wasn't. That's it.
Elon Musk didn't join the company until 5 years after it was founded. That means he was NOT a "founding member". That's literally the definition of the word.
I think we’re mainly disagreeing over the definition of “founder.” If you’re using it strictly to mean someone who was there at the moment a company was legally established, I understand your point. My point is that Tesla’s history also uses the term in a broader sense when describing the people involved in its early development. So I think the distinction is worth discussing rather than treating it as completely black and white

I understand that you see it that way, but calling it a lie doesn’t really address the historical distinction I’m pointing out. I’m not arguing that Musk was there when Tesla was legally incorporated. I’m saying that there is a broader historical discussion about the people involved in Tesla’s early development. That’s the point I’m trying to clarify.
There's no "disagreement" over the definition of the word "founder". It only has one definition. And it doesn't apply to Elon Musk. That's just a fact. There is no "gray area" here, that leaves room for debate
When someone knowingly and intentionally misrepresents the facts...that's called a "lie". Elon Musk is lying about being a "co-founder" of Tesla. It doesn't matter who else is willing to repeat that lie...it's never going to be "true".
That's what used to be said about the word literally too. Time marches on and words change.
Facts don't, though. What you have in this case, is simply a lie that's been told by the current "owner" of the company...but, nothing about the definition of the word "founder" has changed.
Exactly, and that’s part of my point. Words can develop broader meanings over time, especially when they’re used in historical or public contexts. That’s why I think it’s useful to look at the context in which “founder” is being used rather than assuming there’s only one possible interpretation
If they become broadly accepted beyond one person's interpretation...sure. But, no one else in the business world accepts this re-definition. It would invalidate all the legitimate examples of being the actual "founder" of a company.
That term comes with a higher level of significance. Applying it to anyone who comes onboard later, or to a new owner of a preexisting brand, would dilute the significance of the foundational contribution the original owners made to that brand.
But, this is obviously why Elon Musk is trying to commandeer that title for himself. He is attempting to apply a greater level of significance to his role in the company. Which is laughable, considering he's already made a sizable contribution to its success. Calling himself a "co-founder" on top of that, is just a transparently presumptuous lie. Anyone who looks into the history of the company will know that it isn't true...unless they re-define what it means to be a "founder".
And that is just as ridiculous as making the claim in the first place. You guys are embarrassingly gullible for just going along with his bullshit, like it doesn't stink.

Except that you're ignoring the fact that the "documented role" Elon Musk has played...is a lie. The timeline can't be changed, no matter how many pamphlets they print, saying he was there from the start. He wasn't. A fact that's also "documented".

So...you agree that he wasn't involved in founding the company. He just likes to say he was, "on paper".

So yes, Eberhard and Tarpenning were there at the beginning. But Tesla’s own historical descriptions have also recognized Musk and others as part of the broader founding team. The disagreement is really about what we mean by “founder,” not about whether Musk was involved in Tesla’s early creation.
I think we’re actually closer on the facts than you realize. I never said Musk founded Tesla by himself or that he was there from day one. My point is that reducing his role to simply “being on paper” is also inaccurate. No, we're not actually closer on "the facts". You're still operating on a set of "alternative facts" that are contradicted by the actual historical timeline.
Musk was an early investor in a company that was already founded by other people. That is a very important distinction between reality and the fiction that Musk wants people to believe.
