I was literally about to quit this week. I don't hate my job. But it's nothing special, just another fumbling company run by greedy owners trying to make a buck off the backs of others. So kind of standard. I'm so very, very, burnt out. It's been very difficult to get up and go do bullshit every day but, y'know, homelessness.

I've got undeveloped property I've been trying to get to for a while now. It's in the middle of nowhere but I want to put a storage unit on it and camper and live off grid for as long as I can. I'm only about to be 50 soon so still got a few years left (hopefully) but I've got health issues and can't keep doing what I have been for work. At least not full time, so I have to get creative.

And I have nothing left to stay for in the state I am in anymore. I could go now but keep putting it off. I've just been paying off debt and killing time.

Anyway, long story short. Manager texted me 'I hear you're trying to leave me' and I swear I thought he was talking about me quitting, since I had been pretty open about my plans with coworkers. Thankfully I replied with something neutral instead of blabbing out right. Little while later one of the owners called to offer a position recently vacated.

It wasn't a surprise, the guy leaving recommended me to the position and I indicated I was interested. Didn't hear anything else about it and kind of forgot about it.

I get to be my own boss, more or less, do more of the work I like and got a raise.

At some point earlier in my life I would have been ecstatic. But I'm so ready for this chapter to be over that I don't even care. I mean, it's nice, I'm a little optimistic about it but in the spot where gratitude should be there is only emptiness. Feels like this is a reflection of the general state of things. With me. The world.

Guess I will hold off the move until spring.

I worked for a middle-sized local company that got bought by a large local company and it sucked out whatever little soul was left in it. I still cared about doing my job exceptionally well but I did not care about the company at all. All the corporate crap they brought with them was incredibly repulsive to me and it felt like going from a member of a team to a cog in the machine.

Now I'm self-employed and I refuse all business advice I get that doesn't sit with my morals or intuition. I'm not interested in playing the game or competing with other people or companies - I'm doing my own thing. People tell me I should do X and Y, and I tell them that they're free to start their own business and run it exactly the way they want to and that is also what I'm doing with mine. Maybe I'm leaving money on the table but at least I don't hate getting up in the morning and I'm receiving a constant flow of genuine gratitude and sense of meaning in exchange.

I hear you.

I had my own business as a mobile mechanic for a little while. It was one of the most genuinely rewarding things I had ever done. I helped a lot of people who were in tough spots. I lost my shirt in the process, lol. But if I were younger I'd do it again (especially knowing more about running a business) simply for the satisfaction of being a service to others. Big companies seem to strip that out of the process. Good on you for doing things the way you know they should be done and honoring your own personal standards.

I am so tired of working for other people. There's never been a point in human history where the average person could survive without a lot of work in one way or another, so that's not really an issue. It's just it feels like things could be better for everyone if enough people really wanted it to be.

Depending on where that property is waiting till spring will give you a lot more time to develop the plot into something comfortable for winter.

It's mountainous desert, but you're right, waiting until the weather gets nicer sounds like a better plan.

Original goal was to get there beginning of August but you know how these things go.

Feels like I'm in the last stretch of a marathon. All I want to do is take a few months off. It's soooo close, but not quite at the finish line.

Off grid living has become so much more feasible with the rise of cheap solar panels and battery storage, especially if you set it up yourself. I wish you the best. Im only 28 but im already dreaming of the same thing and i luckily dont have any debt so maybe i can make it happen before i turn 50 :D

My only regret in this was not starting to work on a long term plan when I was your age. Even a small cheap parcel is a great back up plan and/or a little get away spot to enjoy some weekend camping. If you get the funds saved up you can even build a modern cabin and enjoy it in style.

Yeah for sure, 20 years ago you could have bought a small piece of land for the price of a grocery store trip. Now you have to get pretty lucky to find anything decent, at least here in Germany.
